These puzzles are more difficult that I expected, but it is a good book.
I bought all three volumes so I'll review and post for all three as these books are slightly different.-Volume ONE - Great book. Definitely LOVED it. Started out fairly easy but got harder along the way (puzzles are organized by percentage of users solved as information is given for best time and average which I assume is from their website). By about puzzle 160, I was researching advanced techniques and still got stuck. I actually moved to volume 2 at this point because I wasn't enjoying that much of a struggle.-Volume TWO - Starts out with 3 instead of 5 grid puzzle and slowly moves to harder puzzles and more grids (I really felt this would have been a better volume One as it was much easier than the first). MUCH easier. I was going through many every day as they were only taking about 10 minutes each. Got much trickier about 180 but still VERY enjoyable. Still had Solve Rate, Best Time and Average but was ordered by Average Time which I preferred, not sure why.-Volume THREE - What the hell? First there is only Average Time solve listed which I was fine with but even with the first puzzle, I had to use more advanced techniques than with most of the other volumes (substitutions, mixed pairs, etc.) from the first puzzle forward. I kept looking online to find out what the heck was happening as I breezed through the First and Second volumes pretty quickly. How people can say these are easy is shocking to me as I feel sooo many are missing information to solve them. I am on page 28 and got stumped on at least four of the puzzles with no way to solve except look at the answers for a hint. How people can solve these in 10 minutes is crazy. I even checked the Puzzle Baron forums to see if anyone was having issues but the forums are outdated and Vol. 3 isn't even listed.From the reviews it seems like I am alone in this, but I just can't see how.I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU DO THESE BOOKS WITH VOL. 2 (FIRST), VOL. 1, THEN VOL. 3
I grew up doing these grid logic problems but I hadn't done one in over a decade until I bought this book. The puzzles are ALL grid style instead of a collection of different types of brain teasers. They're also organized so that the puzzles gradually increase in difficulty as you go -- the perfect warm-up for someone who's a bit rusty. My only complaint is that I wish it were spiral bound to make it easier to write on.
Since I was a kid, I've always enjoyed logic puzzles. I had a teacher that would give them to us for extra credit. After picking back up and completing an old book of puzzles I found at Borders (that tells you how long ago), I went on the hunt for another compact book of puzzles that could challenge me. Finding a book compact in size and light was important to me because I often carry my books with me during my morning commute on the train. This fit the bill!Pros: There's tons of puzzles - 194 to be exact. I also enjoy that there's a little grid on the side of each puzzle to tell you the solve percentage rate, the average time of completion, and the fastest time of completion. The latter gets my competitiveness going.Cons: I wish that, like with my last book, there were thorough explanations for the answers. The back is just a couple pages of an answer key without any explanations if you get stuck. So far this hasn't been an issue, but it would've been nice.I still give the book five stars overall because it's been quite fun, challenging and pretty consistent.
I am addicted to these puzzles! I used to download them and print them and work on them.... but sometimes there was a long time between the fiendish logic puzzles being posted. (I like the Fiendish ones best because they challenge me). I bought this book myself for Christmas but I let my sweet hubby wrap it up for me. I am having the best time! I do the puzzles in pencil so if I mess up (and yes -- sometimes I do mess up -- did I mention these puzzles are FIENDISH!!) I can erase and start again. I also like having the answers in the back and while I won't cheat -- it is nice to verify that I am on the right track in instances as I work through. This book with 100 puzzles will keep me busy for awhile -- and then I will hope there is a Fiendish Puzzles 2!
Volume 3 appears to be thrown together a bit shoddy compared to volumes 1 and 2. There is no information about percentage of folks who can complete the puzzle, like there is in volumes 1 and 2. And the puzzles seem more difficult to solve, with a lot more conjecture than facts, being used to complete them. A bit disappointed in this particular volume compared to the other two. But, I LOVE logic puzzles.
I completed my first logic puzzle in the sixth grade. I solved hundreds more preparing for the LSAT. I've probably solved close to a thousand at this point, thanks to Puzzle Baron's website. As accommodating and awesome as the website is, I really do prefer solving logic puzzles the old-school way: pen and paper. (And the incessant clicking while on PB's website drives me insane.) The grids provided are the perfect size for marking up and the clues are nice and succinct.The book is structured with the "easier" puzzles (or the puzzles that have a higher solve rate, according to Puzzle Baron's website) in the beginning and the "harder" puzzles towards the end.I only have two complaints: 1) while every puzzle is different, some of the same components pop up again and again and 2) the book could be split into concrete sections by difficulty so you could jump around instead of completing the book page-by-page.
I am a huge fan of logic puzzles. I am always looking for a book that has good, well thought out logic puzzles, which can be difficult to find. This book came up when I searched amazon and I noticed that there were more than 1 volume, so I assumed this would mean that they were well written and I was not disappointed. These puzzles are well thought out. The book is not to big, meaning it is easy to carry in the car or on a plane. And it’s soft cover, so it’s easy to manipulate the book to work on different puzzles. Overall, I would recommend this book and will most likely buy another volume!
