ReviewGrains of Golden SandAdventures in War-Torn Africaby Delfi Messinger (Zaire (DRC) 1984–87) The Fine Print Press October 2006 389 pages $15.95 Reviewed by Jan Worth-Nelson (Tonga 1976–78) IN THE FIRST SCENE of Delphi Messinger’s big and ambitious memoir, it is September 24th, 1991. In the streets of Kinshasa, Zaire, machine guns ack-ack on the streets as soldiers mutinying against the corrupt Mobutu Sese Seko, Zaire’s “president for life,” rampage from door to store, hundreds of others joining them in a frenzy of looting, vandalism and murder.      Messinger, stranded within the compound of the National Institute of Biomedical Research where she both works and lives, is terrified. With the Institute and its multi-million-dollar stock of equipment and supplies “abandoned to fate,” she makes a desperate decision. Still in her white lab coat, she grabs a pistol and rushes to the Institute’s sheep pasture. There she singles out and chases down one animal. She ropes its legs, and she shoots it. Then she uses the animal’s blood to paint the word “SIDA” (AIDS) on the compound’s wall.      It’s the only way she knows to keep the plundering hordes away, and it works. The bloody warning soaks into the concrete and stays for months thereafter, until embarrassed bureaucrats finally decree it whitewashed.      What we learn about Messinger’s fierce and intrepid character in this opening is just the beginning of a story which ultimately settles down to describe how she took on the mission of saving the Institute’s eleven bonobo apes, a rare and endangered species. Ultimately, after literally years of encountering bureaucratic resistance, getting caught up in life-threatening politics of conservation, and even once being kidnapped and interrogated for hours, Messinger succeeds ― sort of.      It’s a riveting account, yet Messinger’s delivery presents some difficulties to a reader. Beginning with three years as a Peace Corps Volunteer, her fourteen years in Zaire (renamed the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1997) obviously were extravagantly intense, and back in the U.S., a reader senses, she wants to tell it all. As any Peace Corps Volunteer can attest, living and working overseas, especially in “war torn Africa,” is an earthshakingly powerful experience, but even understanding that, Messinger’s telling somewhat overwhelms. Swatches of events come at a reader in a narrative zigzag, like the patchworks of fabric design with which she begins each chapter. There are many characters to keep track of and some of the interwoven stories are hard to follow. For example, a staffer named Leo places a key role in the opening scene, yet we don’t get to know him in the overall story, and he’s only briefly mentioned again much later. Perhaps this narrative method reflects the frightening, infuriating and shifting complexity of the Africa to which Messinger devoted a quarter of her life. As she puts it, “Living in Zaire had always given me the feeling that I was permanently lashed to a rickety car on a runaway roller coaster.” In parts the book’s structure reflects that nightmare.      Nonetheless, when Messinger gets to her beloved bonobos, the writing and momentum of the story clarify and electrify. Caught in the midst of human violence and deep corruption, they are a species, Messinger explains, that show “a remarkable pattern of peacemaking based on sexual reconciliation,” evolving “a marvelous strategy” for achieving harmony. They do it by soliciting sexual favors from one another ― the only species, other than humans, she notes, to have sex outside the species’ procreative needs.      As Messinger tries to save the bonobos, she lays bare her own vulnerabilities, confronting her fears and doubts with humor and self-deprecation. “What had I learned in the last ten years?” she writes in the book’s conclusion. “What had I accomplished for bonobos? Not a whole hallelujah lot . . . Zaire, Zaire, I’d loved you so! And oh, how I’d hated you. You taught me a lifetime of lessons . . . you gave me the human side of myself.”      But she did save six of the bonobos. There’s something poignant about the survival of this little band of peacemakers, and when Messinger finally flies out of the country with what must be one of the sweetest tribes of creatures on earth, the reader is hugely relieved. Yet one also worries on their behalf, hoping that humans and bonobos alike will stay around long enough to learn to keep their world intact. Jan Worth-Nelson recently published a Peace Corps novel, Night Blind. Her poems, essays, short fiction and reviews have been widely published, and she teaches writing at the University of Michigan – Flint. She and her RPCV husband, Ted Nelson, commute between Michigan and Los Angeles.  Source: http://peacecorpswriters.org/pages/2007/0701/prntvrs701/pv701-all.html#grains0107 - Delfi Messinger - Peace Corps WritersDelfi is a superb writer. She handles very complex material in a lucid way. She also has a good grasp on the style of suspense, and there were many very suspenseful moments to be discussed. We spent a year in Kinshasa in '95-'96, as teachers at Tasok. Delfi befriended us, and was our acting veterinarian. We'd brought four cats with us and rescued several more while we were there. The vivacious Minuit, she with the small transparent worms on her eyes, returned to the US with us, made a jaunt to Venezuela and back, and lived to be seventeen. We were deeply committed to our cats and to other species in general, and needed Delphi badly for the care of our cats. She became a friend as well, a touchstone of sanity in a puzzling culture. She often explained cultural differences that were difficult to comprehend.I had little idea, at the time, how deeply she was involved in efforts to transport the bonobos to a safe haven. We knew that she was using skin samples to trace where the captive baby bonobos brought to her for treatment were going. At the same time, she was gobbling up every bit of veterinary knowledge she could read, and was working quite efficiently with a Zairian veterinarian to do veterinary work for the TASOK staff and for the expatriate and local communities.Zaire was a new world to us. The concepts and strategies used by Zairians to survive were largely hidden from us. Delphi was a translator of cultural differences, a good friend, and a very hard-working, highly intelligent person. She also interjected moments of humor when they were needed. I had never heard French spoken quite that way before--with a broad Texan accent.Zaire/the DRC can become addictive to those expatriates who have gone there to do something to help, and who have been able to stay in positions that provide the means to help. Although one leaves exhausted, one soon feels heartbroken to have left. The experience leaves the long term visitor with a strongly altered perspective on the living world. We recommend this book very highly indeed. Well done, Delfi. You are as skilled a writer as you are a thinker, a zoologist, and a friend. Thank you for telling this portion of a vast, true story that needs to be told. - Everett Rubel - Reader ReviewGrains of Golden Sand: Adventures in War-Torn Africa, by Delfi Messinger, is an astounding account of the author's many years in the chaos of Kinshasa (the capital of Zaire) during the 1970s, working with the Peace Corps as a bonobo conservationist and what I can only describe (perhaps inaccurately) as a "street veterinarian." The title of the book sums up her work perfectly; taken from 'A Dream Within a Dream' by Edgar Allen Poe, the author chronicles her herculean efforts to save a small number of bonobos (a type of primate with some interesting characteristics) that were living under the care of the biological research institute where she worked as a volunteer. Messinger is clearly an expert when it comes to these particular creatures, as well as many others, and she successfully educates the reader about these fine animals in a manner that doesn't require the reader have a master's degree in primatology or veterinary science. For the bonobo fan - and if you're not one already, you will be by the time you finish the book - Grains of Golden Sand is a perfect way to spend a few hours in the company of an expert guide. But although bonobo-centric, the subtitle to this book conveys the breadth of the subject matter covered by Messinger. Grains of Golden Sand is indeed an adventure in war-torn Africa from the very beginning, dumping the reader straight onto the violent, dangerous, gunfire-laced streets of Kinshasa alongside Messinger, showing the reader right off the bat that this is going to be no ordinary tale of human-helps-beast. From there, she quickly takes us back through her childhood, illustrating how she became interested in animals, right through her early zoo keeping days, ultimately volunteering with the Peace Corps and finding herself in Africa, an inspiring tale in itself. And just as quickly, she has us squarely back in Africa with her staff - both frustrating and indispensable at the same time - and the animals, and off on her remarkable true story of saving the bonobos. The book obviously relies on the comprehensive journal that Messinger kept during her time in Zaire, a foundation that allows Messinger to vividly describe the events of thirty years ago with detail and accuracy that is crisp and fresh, not vague and muddied with the passing of time. The reader truly feels as if he or she is contemporary with the happenings, not a distant observer in time or space. The heart of the book lies in Messinger's tireless efforts to save six bonobos and relocate them safely abroad. Messinger masterfully conveys her real-life experiences into something that reads like a good action/adventure tale. The reader is brought to the edge of his or her seat at times, particularly towards the end of the book where years and years of effort hangs by a thread. I don't want to spoil the storyline by divulging too much about what happens, except to say that Messinger crafts her experiences into a book with a narrative that is as gripping as the finest fiction published today. This is both a product of some fine writing skills and a worthwhile story, and in today's marketplace of manufactured non-fiction, this book stands apart. Allow me to explain: many non-fiction books today are noticeably artificial (particularly those written by professional freelance writers, journalists or others who rely on generating prose for a paycheck), in that the author plans the book, sells it to a publisher, and then writes the book - the opposite sequence to what you might expect. The authors of such works often struggle to find (or arrange or manufacture) interesting anecdotes, information, situations and characters with which to populate the manuscript. The result is that the reader can tell that the author is writing merely for a paycheck, and that the subject is barely worthy of our attention. In other words, the author hunts down the story and tries to make it interesting, rather than an interesting story finding and inspiring the author. Messinger's book is the absolute opposite: she lived through events that were extraordinarily interesting, dangerous, and unique in and of themselves, and subsequently found that they were worthy of sharing with others in book form; this great story found her, and not vice versa. Messinger did not disappear off to Africa for the purpose of delivering a manuscript to justify an advance. Grains of Golden Sand shows no signs of the author trying to make something appear more exciting, interesting, or worthy of our time than it actually was, and the book stands out in a sea of commercial non-fiction for this reason. It's a book written around a good story, not a book written to pay the bills. But back to the subject of this review. Grains of Golden Sand gives the reader insight into many aspects of African life and culture, especially the confusing, unpredictable and often-maddening bureaucracy and politics, the interaction between the developed world and Zaire, and the day-to-day adventures to be had merely by going outside one's borders, complete with eye maggots, Ebola, blister beetles, and trucks with names. Such a book could easily have turned out to be a dry, academic series of essays covering each individual topic - bonobo behavior, African politics, animal care, international wildlife regulations etc. - but Messinger masterfully blurs the lines between these distinct subjects and presents the reader with a snapshot of life in Kinshasa in the 1970s, a delicious soup of carefully-blended ingredients that gives the reader an understanding (if it can ever be understood by an outsider) of what living and working in such a place was like. Furthermore, Messinger informs the reader without ever slipping into the typical American style of judging outsiders, inevitably unfavorably, against the standards of the United States. She presents an accurate, honest picture of Zaire, and never encourages the reader to draw any conclusions about the country and culture she describes; it is what it is. A fine example of this is her description of the attitudes towards animal euthanasia later in the book, in which she details the fate of two rabid dogs. In the United States, such treatment would be utterly unacceptable, but she explains without prejudice that in Zaire, attitudes are different. Not necessarily better or worse, just different.Messinger comes across as a fine conservationist and a compassionate animal expert, but I would argue that through this book, she comes across as an extremely fine author too. Reluctant as I am to compare any author to the great John Steinbeck - there simply is no comparison - I cannot help but draw the comparison between Grains of Golden Sand and The Log from the Sea of Cortez, in which Steinbeck is a biologist first, an an author second. The two books are strikingly similar in that they both describe an extended expedition without allowing the science to overpower the readability of the book, and both are accessible to readers of quality literature. Someone with absolutely no interest in sea life can thoroughly enjoy Cortez, and someone with absolutely no interest in bonobos could equally enjoy Grains of Golden Sand; both books are worthy of reading simply for the pleasure of reading a well-crafted and entertaining account of real-life adventures. A further similarity lies in the integral role the various characters play in the narrative; all too often, authors of contemporary non-fiction fail to develop the characters in their books beyond using them merely as blunt tools to help explain the topic of the book. In Grains of Golden Sand, the characters are three-dimensional, essential to the subject and storyline, and they drive the book forward. Messinger affords the interpersonal conflict and cooperation the importance it deserves, highlighting that this is the way things get done in Africa. This book is as much about people and relationships as it is bonobos and conservation.A notable addition to Messinger's book is the multitude of photographs contained within. Rarely are there more than a few pages without small incidental photographs of unfamiliar people, locations, and animals when introduced for the first time (What does an Okapi look like? Oh, I see...), and the center of the book contains numerous full-color pages of photographs. Rather than distracting the reader, these images give us a further glimpse into the colorful world described by Messinger, and help draw us in and reinforce that the amazing tale isn't the the product of the imagination of the author, but from events that actually happened. This book, aside from being a must-read text for anyone interested in bonobos specifically or African conservation in general, is a fine, fast-paced read that will enthrall adults and students looking for a superb piece of non-fiction writing. Some enterprising reader should snap up the adaptation rights to this book as soon as possible, for Messinger and her work in Africa is worthy of translation into a fine little movie, and her writing lends itself to such an outlet. I an reluctant to recommend this book for younger readers, despite Messinger being a fine role model for many a young, adventurous girl, solely for the fact that the bonobos' antics are, well, R-rated; not in a prurient manner, however, but, as Messinger is careful to explain, simply because that is the bonobo way. They are not human, and she explains that it is foolish to interpret their behavior in human terms. Messinger does not overplay these aspects of bonobos, but the few pages in which she explains their interesting interactions cover most of the topics parents would prefer not to have to explain. Overall, however, this is an extraordinary book that I strongly recommend without hesitation. - Emma Cooper - Reader Review

This story, told first hand, is a great way to experience Kinshasa, its animals, people, politics, way of life, etc.

An amazing story of Ms. Messingers attempts to make a difference to a group of apes in war torn africa. In doing so she demonstrates that with perserviance even in Africa you can make a differance, for people as well as apes. Her trials higlight the importance of long term commitment and the understanding that it takes years to learn enough about someplace to do more good than harm. A lesson many well intentioned folks would do well to learn.I highly recommend this well told tail.

I really enjoyed this book. It was not only informative, but a good read. Delfi Messinger told of the negatives and disaster, with dignity and, where appropriate, without losing her great sense of humor.

I had Dr. Rossman as a professor for my masters degree in psychology, he is one of my favorite teachers of all time. The techniques for healing and using an inner adviser are mind blowing. Not only are they very effective you can learn to calm yourself and hear that voice in you at any moment in your life. It's like having the wisest counselor in the world tucked away in your pocket. It's difficult to satisfy everyone's pace on audio cd, so I highly recommend getting Rossman's book "Guided Imagery for Self Healing" because he has a ton of the 'scripts' written out. You can record them in your own voice at your own pace and have fantastic results. The information in the book is a terrific resource as well.I also highly recommend Dr. Bresler's book "Heal Yourself from Pain"... these two are colleagues and the level of experience here is world class.

I purchased this product while I was in the depths of depression. I'd been suffering from the depression due to chronic pain and some other issues as well. This CD was a wonderful relaxation aid for me, even though I would generally fall asleep before the end! Martin Rossman does the actual imagery exercises, and he has a wonderful voice which prompts relaxation itself. I would use the CD while feeling exceptionally depressed or anxious and it did help to balance my emotions, even if temporarily. I also used it many times when I was having trouble falling asleep, since it was so relaxing for me.The CD alone didn't "cure" my depression, but it did definitely help me get through some very rough times. Anyone having chronic pain and/or emotional disturbances owes it to themselves to give this product a try!

Guided imagery is something that saved my life. So good to find book by two of the original teachers.

MEDITATION WAS BRIEF.....A TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT.....TALK, TALK, TALK......I WISH I COULD RETURN IT......SAD WASTE OF MONEY.

These lessons are invaluable for people who are well, in various states of health, and even for those who face serious health challenges. This is one of the best purchases I have ever made. It made something CLICK! inside me. "Clicking" at 62 years old is quite a feat. LOL!! Even that hurts a little. I regained a connection with my body and its ability to heal itself. Dr. Weil is someone I respect and trust, from his consistency throughout the years. This CD is powerful in its message and techniques. Just get it.

I have a several guided imagery CDs of both Dr. Weil and Dr. Rossman. Great tools for relaxation and calming the mind and body. I highly recommend.

I listen to it every night

I got this CD a while ago every single time I use it I feel better after I finish the excercise. It guides you to relax first and then to focuss on meditation and healing and it gives you four different excesices. It is a great start for anyone who wants to explore the mind and body connection and its good effect on health. I highly recomend it if you have a chronic illness. It is a great complement to any medical treatment. It even helps me fall asleep after a hectic day when I'm ussually wired and it is hard to fall sleep. Although, the main purpose to use this CD is to meditate and be "fully aware" while you do it, so when you use it for that purpose, it is better to sit on an easy pose or lotus pose and imagine your body heal. Also, Dr Rosman's voice is very soothing which I think it is a plus.

This is the introduction to tantra book to get. Lama Yeshe's teaching style was direct and useable. This is a transformational book and a book I am often recommending to friends who are interested in Buddhism and in Tantra. Anyone interested in Buddhist tantra should read this. I have just read it again 17 years after reading it my first time (a previous printing of course) and it was still helpful. And if you like this one and want to go into a more in depth book on Buddhist Tantra, Lama Yeshe's book, The Bliss of Inner Fire, is a perfect follow up to this book to go into the practical depths of Buddhist Tantric (Vajrayana) practice, another that I just read for a second time after over a decade.

Although the book is written for westerners, it is not the easiest reading. However if you read slowly enough, it offers really deep insights into tantric psychology and gives not only theoretical but also very practical knowledge. For sure it will affect your life.

This book express in clear and not too much technical words the path of Tantra, giving the prerequisites (the 3 principal aspects of the path), a brief description of the process of death-bardo-rebirth and concise explanations of the generation and completion stages!Of course this is not all there is to know about Tantra but it is perfect to begin!

I chose this book to compliment a Buddhist Fundamentals of Meditation Class I Have been taking for awhile. It is through these teachings that my practice grew. I came to understand more. as a result, I wanted to meditate even more.

This was my first introduction to Buddhist tantra, and it covered all the bases. Although it doesn't go into specific techniques in detail, which are beyond the scope of this book, it provides a good foundation. I enjoyed Lama Yeshes writing style.. It felt like we were having a conversation

This is an easy to read explanation of Tantra for those who are new to it. The book clearly outlines the purpose of Tantra and why it is practiced. You won't find in-depth detail about the actual practices in this introductory text but it serves to provide an easy to understand background to the practices.

Extraordinario, claro y ameno

As the title of the book says, it is a good introduction to tantra. Clear and succinct. Easy to understand.

This book used to be required reading, but it is woefully outdated and has lost relevance. The central themes are still sound but the stale references to companies and industries from the 80s/90s and nods to then-'emerging' technologies and services that are now old school is all just distracting and, to be honest, boring. Since this book arrived and wowed the progressive thinkers of 20+ years ago we have all gone through Lean Start-ups, self-disruption, Red-Blue Ocean, etc. - this is all Innovation 101 now. His hardware and manufacturing-centric world has been replaced with software, content, and services - and, frankly, the models have changed a bit. I was initially encouraged to see the book has been reprinted in 2016 but it seems like they updated little to nothing. It is a shame - the core lessons are still valid but his delivery has lost context in a much-evolved world.

The Innovator’s Dilemma is an interesting work written by Clayton M. Christensen in 1997. The book seeks to explain why certain businesses are successful in their ventures and why other firms fail in response to new technologies. Christensen tries to explain throughout the book why some firms, when new technologies enter the market, fail either because they adapt the new technology or not. The author initially believes that new technologies are constantly emerging and all businesses must continually adapt to stay relevant. However, this proves to be false as in his studies not all firms that ignored the new technology failed while not all firms that adapted the new technology succeeded. This is the fundamental dilemma in the book, and Christensen’s main purpose is to figure out a recipe for managers to follow to stay successful when disruptive technologies enter the market. Most of the book revolves around the study of the disk drive market since they were first developed in the 1950’s. The disk drive industry was important because technology was rapidly advancing and smaller drives were being released within a few years of each other. Many of the established firms often chose not to invest in the next smaller disk drive because they did not have enough memory to meet their standards. However, emerging firms would find new markets for the use of smaller drives and also find ways to make them more powerful, eventually drive the existing firms out of business. Christensen eventually concludes that successful businesses often collapse, despite having good managers, because they fail to find the new markets for disruptive technologies while instead supplying current customers with what they currently need. The goal of the book is to educate people in the business world about how new technologies affect firms and to provide a new way of thinking about disruptive technologies. The end of the piece brings the conclusion that leading firms almost always have set technologies that work well for their current customers, choosing not to invest in new technologies because what they are currently doing is working, current customers do not want change. That is, until new technologies grow to be superior than their predecessors. Christensen does a fantastic job in making his point clear as he provides a plethora of studies across different markets to support his claims. The first half of the book is essentially a detailed history of the disk drive industry that has multiple examples of different firms both choosing to invest in smaller drives and continuing to use their already established, larger drives. He uses this information to create hypothesis’ about why these firms made their decisions and whether it lead them to success or not. Essentially, the author’s process in writing the book is to look at different industries that had disruptive technologies and discover what trends lead to success and what trends lead to failure. He spends a lot of time focusing on a single industry, the disk drive. However, he does bring up several other markets including the mechanical excavator, steel, computer, and discount retailer industries. This variety of different scopes enhances his argument, especially since he sees similar trends across all of these different markets. Many of his examples include established firms choosing not to adopt new technologies because it does not fit their current business motives, but then later being replaced by firms that dared to find new markets for the new technology. His claims are definitely unbiased as all of his conclusions are drawn from the hard evidence that he compiles and delivers to the reader throughout the book about the different firms in those industries. It is almost impossible to disagree with his conclusion since all of his evidence accurately backs up his claims. Personally, I enjoyed reading the book but mostly because it appeals to my interests. As a young business major, the book is intended for me to read and may directly pertain to my own future. However, this book would be challenging to read for the average person that is not interested in business. The book is confusing at some times and is clearly designed for educated readers with a basic understanding of the business world. I would say that the book is a must-read for managers of a company that may be facing disruptive technologies in their industry as it does provide direct advice for people of that demographic. It is a book that I would certainly recommend to my peers within my major. Christensen does a decent job in making the book engaging. Some of the chapters where he is providing data are dry and confusing, but he does always provide a summary at the end of chapters to keep the reader focused. A lot of the book is also repetitive in regards to the disk drive industry and the author reiterating his claims about disruptive technologies. Nonetheless, the book is overall definitely a success for its purpose. There is plenty of evidence throughout the book that prove his claims in real-world situations. His main ideas about why firms choose to serve current customers with current technology rather than try to force new technologies on customers also makes logical sense, given the customer-centric market that is present in today’s society. His complex conclusion that disruptive technologies succeed only when they find a market that does not currently exist is confusing, but is definitely supported with his evidence. In conclusion, the book is a great read for those looking to advance their knowledge in the business world and think about topics that are not usually discussed. The author’s conclusions are creative and complex, but are backed up with hard evidence throughout the piece. The insights and advice brought up by Christensen are useful knowledge to any person studying business and the impact of emerging technologies. This is a book that I will definitely keep in mind in the future and I will recommend to others.

This is not a nail-biter, nor does the author do a good job of keeping you interested. It is dry and tedious. So why do I give it five stars?Clayton M. Christensen has recognized a major problem in business, that of tapping into disruptive innovation in a successful way, and tells us how to avoid the pitfalls and to leverage it to the advantage of the company. He has plenty of insight and is a big-picture thinker. The book is enlightening and is required reading for any business person that is in a field where innovation is important. By the way, this is a business book, not an inventor's book - as it is not about innovation itself, but is about applying that innovation to your business.Once you get through the first couple of chapters you will realize how important this book can be and you will want to read the rest of it.

I've been involved in innovation most of my career, and now wish I'd read this book much earlier. The simple but powerful thesis of the book is backed up by data and case studies from disparate industries. Like many business books it is a bit repetitive at the end. And my Kindle edition suffered from poor editing in the first few sections although those problems disappeared later on. But the ideas and usefulness are five stars.

I learned why the company I work for is failing from this book. It is a great read and very informative. I was educated about the steps it takes to lead a business to success and what people do to sink a company. It was a bit depressing. I realize the lack of sufficient leadership in the company I work for. I am shocked at how many idiot decision makers are running companies. The book made clear why large companies behave the way they do in order to stay on top. The book showed how difficult it is to create a formula of success with innovation. This is a book I will read again. I finished the book with greater knowledge of the business world.

L'Chaim!: To Jewish Life in America: Celebrating from 1654 Until Today, by Susan Goldman Rubin

From Publishers Weekly

In 1654, the first Jews arrived in New Amsterdam—later to become New York City—as refugees from the Inquisition in Brazil, and the 350th anniversary of the arrival of Jews in the United States is being marked with celebrations and books in 2004. This volume is less ambitious than the similar From Haven to Home, but itÂ’s more affordably priced and itÂ’s handsomely illustrated with photos and ritual objects from the collection of the venerable Jewish Museum in New York City. Rubin, a writer of notable books for children (Searching for Anne Frank; Margaret Bourke-White), makes history personal by focusing on individuals and families—some well known, some not—who exemplify the wide-ranging experiences of Jews in America: Haym Solomon and Abraham Cohen supported the American Revolution; Joseph Jonas, the first Jew to settle in Cincinnati, represents the move west; Rose Schneiderman, pictured at her sewing machine, is one of the host of immigrants who worked in the oppressive garment factories. Works by artists Ben Shahn, Jacob Epstein and George Segal illuminate the history and culture of Jewish America; a Yiddish patriotic poster supporting WWI shows how Jews identified with the American cause. So intertwined have "Jewish" and "American" become in many JewsÂ’ minds that one historian, Shalom Goldman, of Emory University says, "I grew up thinking that Thanksgiving was somehow a Jewish holidayÂ…" Anyone who identifies with that statement will take pleasure in this volume.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From School Library Journal

Grade 5 Up - A beautifully produced and illustrated book. Rubin focuses on particular individuals to show how European immigrants have found ways to be both Jewish and American. Though there are some experiences that reflect the tension between the religious and the secular world, the tone of the book is upbeat. The author does not provide a history, but uses a series of vignettes connected by a basic chronological narrative. For instance, the chapter "Jews in the American Revolution" focuses on Haym Salomon and does not discuss general Jewish attitudes toward the Revolution, or ideas about Jews that were held by members of the Revolutionary movement. Rubin is meticulous in her use and crediting of quotations, and they contribute to the text's liveliness and immediacy. Some of the most interesting vignettes are about Jewish cowboys and pioneers. The illustrations include paintings, photographs, and maps. Artifacts from the Jewish Museum are shown and matched to the text in terms of period, but they do not always relate to or amplify the narrative. Although Rubin attempts to show the diversity of American Jewry by focusing on African-American Jews and an Iranian Jew, one noticeable omission is feminism and its impact on Jewish life in America. L'Chaim is more likely to enjoy success as a gift book rather than as a resource for research. It could, however, be a jumping-off point for more serious reading, especially if students use the extensive bibliography, which has useful notations for adult books that are appropriate for younger readers. - Sue Giffard, Ethical Culture Fieldston School, New York City Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Book and delivery EXCELLENT!The information, articles, photos, sorrows, tragedies of our Jews is presented clearly, better than any other book of its ilk. I recommend it 100% per cent, and more. Maggie Wise Riley

Produced in association with The Jewish Museum, this book is anoverview of Jewish life in America from the earliest Colonial days to the present. Eighteen chapters follow Jewish-American history chronologically, with a few chapters zeroing in on topics of particular interest such as the life of Rebecca Gratz or Irving Berlin's army experiences. The large, square volume with its many color photographs has the feel of a coffee-table book, and its short tid-bits of information suit it to browsing more than to research purposes.Photographs and art objects from The Jewish Museum are large, well-reproduced, and clearly captioned, and the pages are made attractive with color accents (there is hardly a white page in the whole book!).This book was named a 2004 Notable Children's Book of Jewish Content by the Association of Jewish Libraries. An audio interview with the author is available on The Book of Life podcast's July episode at [...]

Fully illustrated. L'Chaim! celebrates the 350th anniversary of the first recorded Jewish settlement in North America as well as the Jewish people from all over the world who, over the last three and a half centuries, have settled in communities throughout the continent. The process of becoming a Jewish American has meant retaining a connection to one's roots while integrating into a new culture. This book communicates a particularly American story as it reflects and illuminates some of the finest aspects of life in the United States: the potential for diversity to flourish, the possibility of overcoming political, economic, and social obstacles, and the creativity that is encouraged for developing a full life as both an American and a Jew.

Finally, there is a work for young people on the 350th anniversary of Jewish settlement in America that meets the high standards of adult books created for the 350th. Noted young adult book author Susan Goldman Rubin has written the junior version of American Judaism by Jonathan Sarna--the young person's book of the year for the 350th. L'Chaim achieves its purpose by focusing on individuals and families who have helped shape the American Jewish experience. Rubin is an award-winning writer who has written many biographies of creative people, so she is ideal to tell this story. The book is accompanied by extraordinary photographs of objects and images from the collection of the unsurpassed Jewish Museum in New York City. What a wonderful book to read, to use as a reference, and to pass down to younger children and grandchildren in the future!

I love how alot of character's from different series get together in this book. Really good story! Can't wait for more.

I have really enjoyed this series so far despite Ava's death. Now that there will be dragons in it I will be sure to keep reading.

The story line was pretty good but there was so many errors. Words inserted where they didn’t belong and character names mixed up. Really got annoying. You need to prof read.

What more can I say? Fantastic author with wonderful characters and storyline. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your world

Not the best book in this series but overall this story was good. Don't know what the author could have done better but this series was Exciting

Looks like this will be a good series with interesting characters, plot and lots of excitement. Looking forward to the next book

Would like to see this story line continued. Good development of characters. Sometimes got a little too wordy. Let the reader use his imagination.

As I expected, another well written, well edited page turner you don'twant to put or to end! Great book for age.

Very weak on the content side, for a paperback. I did not want the Kindle version for travel convenience, and frankly it would be overpriced if you paid the digital cost. Content is simplistic, and seems like something that was developed for a blog. While there are ideas that seem interesting, too much of the 74 pages is spent on hyping side trips that seem to be hustling for a few tour operators. Even the interesting suggestions are not unique and can be retrieved with a hour or two of web surfing. While 74 pages isn't a lot to start with, the font size is quite large and the layout leaves too much white space. Overall the content could fit in 40 pages with some crisp editing. One major oversight is the lack of even simple, maps. There is no concept of distance, and this was most noticeable in the Sicily section (its not a small island).Overall I'd suggest readers pass on the book. Spending twice as much on other tour books will get you twenty times times the content.

I could have written this book myself and I haven't been to Malta!
