#16,093 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I must repeat here what I've said about all of Douglas E. Richards' other novels. This book is not science fiction per se but rather is brilliantly based on actual technologies that are, for the most part, presently envisioned but not yet realized. In this book, Richards takes brain-embedded computer chips designed to access the internet to another level: mind reading on a larger scale than one individual (Nick Hall). Compromise of both technologies by evil doers leads to catastrophic consequences only someone as creative as this author could conceive. Douglas Richards' presentations never cease to be captivating, and many sequences are real nail-biters. I'll admit I did find the plots to be considerably more complicated than in Richards' previous novels, not in their technology but just in themselves, with several interacting characters having different agendas and mental defects ranging from warped to downright insane. Yet the plots are arguably well worth the reader's effort to follow. Finally, this book is a superb follow-up to Game Changer but can certainly be enjoyed as a stand-alone work. And I strongly suspect we'll be hearing a lot more about Victor, Browning, Bostic, the ESP recipe, and Nazry in Douglas Richards' next book.Martin Fricke, Ph.D., nuclear physicsSan Diego

There are only two things you need to know prior to reading Douglas E Richards new tecno-thriller "Mind War".Firstly - if you haven't read a novel by Richards before, strap yourself in and hang on tight, as you are in for an absolute thrill ride from beginning to end.Secondly - take the next day off work so you can sleep, as this book will keep you up all night needing to know what happens next!Although this is officially the third novel by Richards with lead character Nick Hall, it is a definite "stand alone" as I mentioned in my headline, and does not need to be read as a third installment as you may expect with many other series. It will, however, make you want to read the first two if you haven't already! The twists, the turns, the back story, the side stories, ....every single aspect of this book makes you want to just keep turning pages right from the word go. Unfortunately, you do eventually get to the end.........and it just leaves you wanting more, which I am sure Richards has the ability to deliver in spades. All of the characters involved draw you in completely - especially for me, the ones designed specifically for the reader to "love to hate"!From the amazingly loyal and patriotic mind reading marine biologist who routinely saves so many innocent people he should wear a cape, the arms dealer who is more true to his word than Superman (yet will never take betrayal lightly), to a psychotic genius with a god complex, you cant help but be completely immersed in each an every moment and character this story has to offer.Richards once again proves he is one of the most ingenious and entertaining writers of this genre, taking the techno-thriller to new extremes. I'd actually go so far to say Richards, in my opinion, is one of the finest fiction writers of his generation.I thoroughly recommend this book to all who love a fast paced, action packed thriller with conceptual science so well researched and written, you'd think it was already a reality.

This, the third of the Nick Hall series, has the same qualities as the previous two: it's a thriller, moved along with enough changes in the path of the story to make most heads spin. The character support for the story is dependent upon in-depth constructions of Hall, the main protagonist, and Victor, the primary villain. To his credit, Mr.. Richards portrays the villain with as much richness of character as he does Hall, which has the effect of enabling many plot twists that would otherwise be difficult to justify.Crafting of the story aside, I would be remiss if I didn't praise the amount of research Mr. Richards devotes to his settings, both geographical and technological. He describes places I know with satisfying fidelity, and this gives me confidence that the settings I don't have personal experience with are as he portrays them. It is similar with technology: the entities I know about are confirmed by in depictions, thereby providing me with education about those of which I have not yet heard. I find this style most satisfying to read.Let me note, without risking spoilers, that Mr. Richards has left the endings of his previous Nick Hall novels at least slightly open to extension. This one is no exception to that practice; I expect there will be another Nick Hall novel sometime in the future.

My review is for all three books of the series - "Mind's Eye", "Brain Web", and "Mind War".These are the first books from Douglas Richards that I've read, after a friend recommended "Mind's Eye". The series is a near-future techno-thriller - not sci-fi per se. These are a "what if" story - "What if someone accidentally got the ability to completely read minds? Surface thoughts, deep memories, the whole mind an open book?" How would that person get through their day, having everyone's thoughts - good, bad, disgusting, etc - shoved into their head day in and day out? That's the underlying premise of the books, and Richards has obviously given it some thought. This is "thinking man" sci-fi at it's best, taking current technology, looking forward a bit, and projecting how it might affect an individual and the world at large.I found the characters to be believable, if a little stiff. Not enough to throw me off of the story, though. I enjoyed the thought-provoking plot, the world building, the very believable technology, and the pace of the books. (I read them in quick succession). If you like thought-provoking sci-fi, give this series a try.

After having read the Summer Queen, I knew I would have a strong woman to learn about. But in the Winter Queen, Eleanor comes forward as not only strong, but occasionally ruthless. She has her agenda, and neither husband, brother, or a reigning King is going to prevent her from putting her son on the throne. In a way she reminds me of Margaret Beaufort. She has evolved from the Summer Queen, and sometimes in questionable ways. However, this book reads easily, and keeps you turning pages, or swiping as fast as you can. It was nice to read of someone from another period as so many rest with the Tudor period.

Love Eleanor (even when she’s called Alienor) and have read extensively about her, both fiction and non fiction. This is excellent. Better than the first book of the trilogy. It gives a clear “look” into the deterioration of the relationship between Alienor and Henry. Both of them are complex individuals and Chadwick gives a logical interpretation of their continued travel toward estrangement. Becket is covered but not dwelt upon. You never have to worry about historical accuracy with her. She does her homework. If you ever want to wade through the hard core history, Amy Kelly’s “Eleanor and the Four Kings” is fantastic, still the best. I recommend this one highly.

This is the second book in Chadwick's series about Eleanor of Aquitaine. I found it somewhat darker than the first book (The Summer Queen), but it was still a page turner for me. In this book, we see her husband King Henry II as a "control freak" who treats Alienor, aka Eleanor, as a brood mare and his children as pawns in his grab for power and land. He treats others as pawns too, including Thomas Becket. However, Alienor is not innocent in this story. She too plots and connives. She is shown as a strong woman in parts of the book, but she does not have the power that Henry has. In fact, she doesn't have the power that many of the other men have. The little power that she has comes from her scheming and manipulating as well as the alliances that she makes.I look forward to reading the third book in this series which should be published in a few months.

Like all of Elizabeth Chadwick's books, it's pretty much a masterpiece. This one was not my favorite, though, probably because of the subject matter. Not a happy time in the life of Eleanor of Aquitaine. The characters are well drawn, however, and the book paves the way for the third part of the trilogy. Henry is a character you will remember. Her children are also growing up into memorable characters. Eleanor experienced a difficult life. Chadwick makes this very clear. I had to order this book from Britain, since it is not yet available in the U.S. It was worth the $20+ price, but do not expect a romantic bed of roses. Far from that, this book lays the groundwork for Eleanor's twelve years of imprisonment in middle age.

Elizabeth Chadwick is one of the best historical novelists of our time bringing the medieval era to life with her storytelling. She delivers with a realistic voice and is not overly dramatic with her topics, taking her time to tell the most believable version of history featuring notable protagonists such as Queen Eleanor and King Henry II of England.Eleanor's life story is one of my favorites, and I have probably read at least ten books with her as a feature character. Her legend is a remarkable one as a Duchess becoming a Queen of France, a Crusader, and then a Queen of England, while raising kings and daughters to kings.I was completely enthralled with the first installment of the Eleanor trilogy, The Summer Queen. The Winter Crown took on a bit of its name and seemed a bit more cold and less passionate, but given the subject matter I could hardly complain. Here Eleanor is already married to Henry II and the novel opens to his coronation in 1154 ending with her incarceration at Sarum in 1174.These are the years of childbearing, all seemingly done as part of duty rather than love. Eleanor does her best to raise the children as Henry pulls the strings along the way, leaving little room left for Eleanor's wishes. She is portrayed as a regal Queen, and not as a sex-driven wanton as other writers have made her out to be, and Eleanor seems much more subdued in this story. It is very easy to dislike Henry and his overbearing ways and to sympathize with Eleanor and her lack of power. The Thomas Becket affair is addressed, along with the romantic affairs of Henry and how these events affected Eleanor.Where previous books had shown Eleanor to be less of a mother and more of a Queen, Chadwick does put forth a more caring visage in this representation, which helps to endear us to Eleanor. Another welcome addition was the inclusion of a friendship between Eleanor and Isabel de Warrenne, and the gallant character of William Marshal was also appreciated. Chadwick's novel is foremost a story of Eleanor; the focus is on her, flaws and all, and not simply a rehash of absolutely everything that happened to Henry and his kingdom. The last installment of the trilogy (The Autumn Throne) coming in 2016 will hopefully represent a thawing of the chains around Eleanor as she guides her sons closer to the coveted throne. Henry II has to die at some point -and as bad as it may sound- I look forward to that occurring in the last book, just as I look forward to seeing the fruits of Eleanor's labor come to light. Elizabeth Chadwick shows off her research and hones in on Eleanor and her character, and I am hoping for a very intriguing climax during the finale of the trilogy. If you haven't read many books on Eleanor before, this will be a treat for you.

As a history lover I have always been fascinated with the complex relationship and marriage that Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II of England had. This book was a very excellent read; in fact I enjoyed it better than the one before, The Summer Queen. The cruelty and spite of Henry toward Eleanor only served to later hasten his downfall and his betrayal by their sons. I understand that kings at that time had mistresses, but Ms. Chadwick made Henry sound like an oversexed teenager that just couldn't get his libido under control. He was cruel, narcissistic and downright evil. I felt for Eleanor because she was indeed an exceptional woman before her time. A Duchess in her own right who brought part of France with her into the marriage, she would have made an exceptional monarch without Henry. The fact that Henry refused to relinquish some of his control and allow Eleanor to add to the marriage with her gifts just shows how insecure Henry really was. I am so looking forward to continue reading about this couple in the last installment, The Autumn Throne.

If you love to watch the birds but aren't an expert (and don't intend to be) then this is the book for you.I have other bird books but sometimes its hard to find the bird in the book before the bird in the garden disappears because you have to figure out which category of birds to look under. This book has the birds divided by color, the sides of the pages are clearly marked- brown, gray, white, etc. You just look up the bird by color. the photos are great and lots of details crammed onto each bird page, such as time of year birds are in area, and physical characteristics and behavior.I'm ordering LOTS of these for Christmas gifts. The birds of Oklahoma, The birds of Texas, and The birds of Washington- for friends and family.

This Birds of Oklahoma book is a compact and colorful book. It is divided by bird color, so if you see a red bird you can look under the red tab and find your bird! I leave it on my kitchen table with a pair of binoculars nearby, and I've already identified several species of birds. My son took an ornithology (study of birds) class at college, and he was surprised at how well this book is organized and how nice this book is. He was going to buy me a book about bird identification for Christmas, but after he saw this book, he changed his mind.5/25/2016 update: My son continued to say how much he liked my Birds of Oklahoma book to the point that I got him his own copy. Some of the pictures are slightly different in his edition of this book, but most if not all of the information is the same.

The photographs in this book are fantastic. Information might be a bit casual for an ornithologist, but I found it easy to understand. I bought two copies - one for myself and one for children of a dear friend to whom I gave a bird feeder, seed and suet. This is the first bird book that indicated the male and the female Blue Jays look the same. No wonder I have not been able to discern a difference between them. I think it is a great book that illustrates the birds common to Oklahoma.

Great simple guide, but will be buying a more thorough book because some birds aren’t listed. I love this little guide and Stans notes are really fun. Highly recommended for a beginner bird watcher or for family bird watching. I actually bought the birds of Texas book and mailed it to my sister who enjoys her back yard birds as well! She was thrilled!

Very easy to use, great photos for identifying the birds, and the way birds are organized by color is perfect for your basic “what the heck am i looking at” kind of bird watcher.Id highly recommend it for any casual Oklahoma bird watcher.Cheers!

My girls love looking through here to identify what bird they see. Someone complained because it was organized by color, but that is just exactly how we use it: "It's brown! Look at the brown ones!" If you are looking for a detailed, scientific guide, keep scrolling, but if you are an average family looking for something to use with your backyard feeder, get this one!

We have a number of bird feeders set up in our back yard and we enjoy watching them feed. With this book we are able to identify more. Easy to use because it is color coded for the main color a bird displays. So simple to use.

My very favorite field guide to Oklahoma birds. I have gifted copies to two other casual birders. The birds are organized by size within colors, with good, basic information about habits and habitats. I have several birding apps, but find that this book is more helpful with bird ID.
