While I believe Scally has solid intentions, his hysterical and "wagging finger of accusation" style of writing distracts from the facts. The work is also done in traditional academic format with abstract, detailed summary Table of Contents and then a tremendous amount of detail within chapters. The bottom line, yes, AAS is a medical intervention which does have a down side in cessation. At the same time, there is little evidence that Scally wants to provide, or seemingly aware of regarding Post-Cycle Therapy (PCT), which is usually used by many in the medical field and even in the black market of AAS use, to decrease the likelihood, duration and severity of Anabolic Steroid Induced Hypogonadism (ASIH). While I find no fault with his biochemistry or the basis for his concern, it feels very "Chicken Little" and as if he is taking the entire medical community on with outrageous concern. While I applaud his assertion and willingness to put the problems out, but it is not as constructive as simply assaultive. If you are looking for a contrary view on AAS and you have a solid medical background or at least basic endocrinology, it MIGHT be worth a review.
Covers Knowledge gap with main stream Medical doctors that may prescribe an anabolic steroid for aids wasting, cancer cachexiaetc but fail to realize that post treatment therapy must be done to restore persons gonadal production. All of the possible muscle that is rebuilt could be lost if testosterone production is not restored.
I found this book very helpful to me. I am on steroids for Hypo-gonadism. It tells you about the side effects and the symptoms of withdrawal. It mostly deals with steroid abuse but you can still get valuable info from it.
While the author clearly is passionate about the issue and has played an important role in exposing some genuinely shoddy medical research, I was hoping for more breadth in the book. I would have liked to read about historical steroid research for performance enhancement in, say, East Germany etc. Instead, a number of studies are described in great detail which really don't differ in the aspect relevant to this book - the (spoiler alert) lack of following patients' condition after the studies conclusion as they struggle with their AAS induced hypogonadism.As such, the book simply has a narrow focus and if you're expecting something else you might be a little disappointed.
The book itself is very complete and Dr. Michael Scally has put together a great book, mostly directed to the medical community, but can also be read by people with some basic knowledge about endocrinology.My only issue with this Kindle edition is the horrible formatting and presentation of the book. There is no table of contents, there are no tables, some figures has got issues, and others. It is difficult to navigate to a specific chapter, everything it's like a copy-paste of the text put into a Word document. I wish they put more effort in making this easier to actually read.
Along with Michael Mooney, I am the co-author of the book "Built to Survive: a comprehensive guide to the medical use of anabolic therapies, nutrition and exercise for HIV+ men and women." I am very happy to see that Dr Scally spent months of work researching the effects of anabolics on the Hypothalamic Pituitary Testicular Axis (HPTA)and how these compounds can cause long term hypogonadism (low testosterone) if not used properly. Most doctors in clinical practice are not trained on how to avoid hypogonadism after anabolic steroid use for medical and non medical purposes. We have used them with great results them for HIV wasting for many years using good physician monitoring. Hopefully, this book will make it possible for clinicians to learn the main issues surrounding the proper use of these life-saving compounds. I am so glad that Dr Scally wrote a simple explanation on a protocol that may help reset our body's own hormonal axis to prevent the debilitating effects of "post-steroid crashing." There are no published data on the subject, so this book is groundbreaking. Dr Scally reviews data on the use of anabolic steroids for the following medical uses:- To treat wasting syndrome related to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV),- To treat strength and weight loss associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Chronic Kidney Disease/Hemodialysis- To counteract osteoporosis and the negative effects of glucocorticoids on bone density and lean body mass,- To reverse and prevent the age-related loss of lean body mass (Sarcopenia.)For physicians and lay people who love to read easy-to-understand clinical information, this book is for you. Every man using testosterone or anabolic steroids should do their research to avoid the most common and untreated side effect caused with the use of these compounds. When used correctly with solid research data and monitoring, anabolics can be great to improve quality of life and lean tissue in people suffering from many debilitating conditions. However, most of the benefits disappear after their use is stopped and quality of life tends to worsen unless an effective HPTA reset protocol is used. This book explains such approach.Nelson Vergel
I really enjoyed the book; it tells it like it is.I just can't get over the medical community and its blind eye to the concept of recovery from steroid use.Just as there are dangers of low androgen levels with older men, same can be said for low androgens following steroid cycles, even in young men.The author goes into great details about the dangers of low androgen levels in men who use steroids, and the lack of knowledge in the medical field to treat these subjects.Their fix is to give them testosterone, which is not treating the problem only the symptom.
What the author fails to understand is that all steroid users abuse it. He happened to abuse if but it is just a matter of Will power to either do it right or not take it all. Still, it was insightful for those who abused steroids as to what they were going through in achieving the bodybuilder look.
