About the Author

Sally Sexton Kalmbach is a fourth generation Chicagoan whose family founded a coffee and tea company in the early 1880s, at the same time Potter Palmer was developing Chicago's Gold Coast. Sally has taught classes in Chicago history at the Newberry Library, and has given numerous speeches and customized tours for individuals and small groups. Her expertise and ability to present material in an accessible, yet informative manner have resulted in a loyal following. Her topics include: Chicago's Gold Coast; Revisiting the Columbian Exposition of 1893; Mrs. Potter Palmer's Gold Coast; Women and the White City; Mansions and Millionaires: The McCormickville Walking Tour, offered by the Driehaus Museum; and Mrs. James Ward Thorne's Miniature Rooms. Sally is a board member of the Chicago Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians, a volunteer docent at the Charnley-Persky House Museum, and a fund-raiser for Opportunity International, which helps underprivileged women start their own businesses.

Excellent read with great historical pictures and facts. Luckily I had in my library a lovely book featuring each of the rooms described in Ms Kalmbach's bookso I could observe what she was describing as the rooms were not pictured in her book.

A big plus here is that this book is an Adobe product and, like everything from Adobe, all their "stuff" is excellent! However, there is a problem with the illustrations. The screenshots replicate the very dark screens, said screens being excellent when working on a computer but which reproduce quite poorly on the printed page. Add to this that some of those screenshots are so miniscule that making out elements is nigh impossible. Of course, if you're seated in front of your computer while going through the lessons you will eventually be able to "interpolate" what's on the printed page, something that really shouldn't be necessary. After all, illustrations are meant to illustrate, not confuse or, in some cases, be almost illegible.There is definitely a learning curve with this product which is hardly a surprise considering its complexity, which of course is the key to After Effects having, well, so many after effects available for your videos. So with the exception of the illustrations/screenshots, I would have given the book five stars.

If you want to learn After Effects or any program really, you can't go wrong with Classroom in a Book. They always explain every program at length and in great detail to get you up and running fast. This one was no exception. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

Great book series! I used this series years ago when I was just learning the graphics business and they have not lost their learning appeal. If you want to learn a specific program, buy this series. You can't go wrong. Also the help files so that you can work along with the lessons are all online and you download them. Better than having to insert a CD, which most computers now a days don't come with anyway. For that I give it 4****.

This is more appropriate for users who are just getting their feet wet in After Effects. I was hoping for something with a little more depth. It's good for beginners, but if you have any AE experience at all, you should probably look elsewhere.

Because it's used already you can't use the access code to download the lesson filesI needed this book for a class so it was a waste of moneyI'm gonna have to buy the book after I already rented it

It was a great read, I learned a lot about After effects through this book i'm glad I bought it. To be honest I like books better than something online which is the reason why I bought this. You don't need this book though you can self learn.

Well written book. This book helped refresh my memory and get back up to speed after being away from VFX work for nearly 6 years. I also learned new techniques and features. Very happy I purchased the book.

I am a total noob and this book did a good job getting me starting on my way to using After Effects "effectively". I am using this in combination with a number of other tutorials.

Oliver captures many moods in her poetry. I have other anthologies that I prefer, but I reach for Twelve Moons when I admire a moon rise or enjoy an evening on the porch.

This has become a treasured volume in my home. Of her many works, this one is very female, I love it.

I am currently working on a production of a play based on two poems from this work, it is haunting and lyrical with gorgeous imagery. A treat for any lover of poetry.

Have so many Mary Oliver books, she is a favorite of mine.

About the Author

Shannon Maxwell, author of Our Daddy Is Invincible!, is an active and respected advocate for wounded warriors and their families. She grew up in Texas. After graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas A&M University at the age of twenty, she married her college sweetheart, Tim Maxwell. In 2004, when her husband, LtCol Tim Maxwell, USMC (ret), was wounded with a penetrating traumatic brain injury (TBI) her focus became furthering wounded warrior family initiatives. She currently serves as Vice President of SEMPERMAX Support Fund which she co-founded in 2009, having first co-founded the non-profit organization, Hope For The WarriorsTM in 2006 to address immediate and long-term needs of families recovering from traumatic injuries. In addition, Shannon sits on the Advisory Boards for Thomas Jerome House, Inc., a community home for service members with TBI, and the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program. As an appointed member of the Traumatic Brain Injury Family Caregiver Panel, established through the National Defense Authorization Act of 2007, Section 744, Shannon helped create training curriculum that would educate and assist Family Caregivers in understanding traumatic brain injury and participating actively in the care of their wounded family member. The curriculum was adopted by the Defense Health Board and approved for distribution on April 14, 2010. Shannon has been recognized for her efforts in support of the wounded with the Presidential Call to Service Award and became one of five recipients of the 2007 National Military Family Association s Very Important Patriot Award. Shannon and her husband, Tim, adopted their youngest daughter in 2008. They now reside with their family in Northern Virginia. Their work as advocates for wounded, ill, injured families is ongoing.

This book has a very nice page about the brain and how each part of the brain effects different parts of our functioning. This was very helpful in explaining to an 8 year old client about her own parent's dysfunction.The story line is helpful as well. It is particularly helpful if the situation you are dealing with is explaining an injury from war or an acute accident. My particular client's situation was not an exact match but it still proved to be helpful.

This book is so well-written and well-illustrated, perfect for kids. I have recommended this book to my friends to help them explain TBI to their little ones.

Whether you are explaining TBI's to a child or to the relative who wants the condensed version, this book is excellent. The terminology is easy to understand, the descriptions are clear and concise and the photos are attractive. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that some pages are lengthy and lose the attention of smaller children. (but dont let that stop you from buying it!)The book explains how a traumatic brain injury has changed the life of a little girl after her father is wounded in the war. Also the victim of a traumatic brain injury from a bike accident, the little girl guides you through the story with her questions, actions and narrative. While the father int he story is combat wounded, the book doesn't focus on the military aspect and would be good for explaining any brain injury from car accident to stroke.

Shannon has captured the essence, complexity and conditions that surround a head injury patient. This book is applicable to all in the life of the TBI - the injured, their family, care givers - everyone! A wonderful resource, a terrific read - pictures and a story that are easy to relate too. With a writing style somewhere between the dry heavy pseudo-historical narration of Tolkien and the easy storytelling style of Rowling, Soulbound by Bethany Adams is one of the most original fantasy novels I have read in quite some time. While familiar elements exist, they are turned on their side completely. Love at first sight or at least the indication that someone is a perfect match, risks dishonor and disaster. A parent's love for a child is shown in several different ways, as is the child's love for the parent, but not all of these leave one with a happy warm feeling. The world is complex, with many details of its complexity merely hinted at. Adams has managed to create a world that feels real, that has obvious complexity, and at the same time does not let the world-building get in the way of the story. I find I am as eager to find out snippets of how her world works as I am to find out what what happens next.My only quibble on this is its classification, and I am not sure if that was a decision of the author, Amazon or some other agency. While there is a romantic element to the story, I would not have classified it as a "Romance". If you are seeking a steamy romance, or even a book that the focus is on two people, and their relationship, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a book that explores a more broad range of human (and elven) emotions, relationships, and interactions, then Soulbound is a decent read. If you just want a good story with good characters, some mystery, some action, and a gripping plot then Soulbound is a perfect choice.

Overall, hard to call this book good or bad. It almost accomplished a feat I'd rarely seen, but managed to ruin it last minute. Basically, the author almost made the soul mate cliche good by adding choice to it, but then ruined all the build up with random jealousy in a world where polyamory wasn't unusual (and where the admiration of the other dude's looks was repeatedly said to be slight aesthetic but mostly just trying to place Ralan) followed by a rushed sex scene that didn't make sense with its placement. So close...The beginning was a bit jarring, as I had no real grounding for the setting, but this was quickly remedied in the next few paragraphs. I wish the book had started with Arlyn leaving home and going through the mists. But eh, it is what it is, and as I said, the first few chapters managed to settle things well enough.The characters were unique and developed (even if most of them had very similar names) and I liked the world(s). The language and culture had me hooked! The world and characters were more what led me to finishing the book than the plot, though. Not that it was bad. It's more that it wasn't really there other than "here's all of the things that are going on, and here's a love interest, oh, and there's also some attempted assassinations." I wish there's been more clues and such, at the very least. It didn't give me a lot of time to figure out who the bag guy was before just outright naming him and having him monologue about his motivations, which was a bit weird.The writing was good though. It had packets of blandness, but I think part of that is the author not knowing what scenes to skip. The scenes I liked least felt like the author didn't enjoy writing them anymore than I liked reading them. Thankfully, these were scarce.There were also several nice lines, and I highlighted many of them because they were so thought provoking. I also liked the inclusion of potential LGBT characters, although the failure to include an actual LGBT character following that was a bit of a letdown.I had two pet peeves about this series, though. The first was the overuse of fragments that didn't add anything by being fragments. Many were so jarring that I had to reread them, and on a few occasions, I had to stop for a while to try to figure out what the intended meaning was. The second was the repeated information. For the first 75% of the book, Lyr was telling people he had a daughter at least once a chapter, sometimes even as much as once per scene. And then once everone knew he had a daughter, in came Ralan who had to tell everyone he hadn't used his powers since he went to earth. It got old fast.In the end, this was a book good enough for me to finish (I admittedly almost rage quit at the badly done/rushed sex scene, but I'm glad I stuck with it to the end), but not good enough for me to read on in the series.

Let me begin by first saying this: I don't usually write reviews. I always rate books I read here (and I am a voracious reader), but seldom have I ever written reviews. That being said, Bethany Adams' entry into the wonderful genre of "Other worlds" fantasy fiction is well worth your time. I found myself unable to put it down from the very beginning and was amazed at the impeccable editing and polished feel the book had. After reading so many books with less than stellar editing on Amazon, this was a much needed breath of fresh air. The author has brought together a tale that leaves the reader eager for the next book and spins a world structure with just enough detail to frame the story perfectly, but without getting bogged down in world-building as is common in the genre. In short, this book is well worth your time. Don't hesitate to add it to your collection.

I liked this book very much, though towards the end things happened and ended so quickly. Is there a book2? Lately I've been reading a lot of cliffhanger books with promise of a part.2 and/or 3, but nothing ever comes out. Hopefully this book has a part2 given the potential for one.

I loved this story! I wish it had more romance, the sex is just implied. I feel like Aryln loves her father and her soul mate but I wish these people had time. Events happen so fast that they don't have time to get to know one another. I cannot wait for . The next installment! There better be one bc this ends on a major CLIFFY!!!!

This book starts out by jumping into the story. For me, that was a good start but it goes from promising to grinding withing the first chapter. There are plenty of characters in this book but absolutely no character development. While I normally enjoy reading a story with differing view points, the author jumps from character to character so fast it feels like you are driving down a road full of pot holes. The transitions among view points are awkward, often irrelevant, and lead towards a totally predictable ending. There is very little emotion from the main characters, no believable growth and, despite the fact that this is the first book in a series, everything wraps up conveniently.The premise of this book is promising; unfortunately, it follows the pedestrian formula of a genre over-saturated with superficial characters, insta-love, predictability, and a world where magic conveniently erases any real need to overcome adversity.

Although this book is short it makes for a quick and easy read. It sure was a joy for me to read. Layne's father was a bull rider in the rodeo, and he was a great bull rider. But a tragic accident happened. Layne wants to be a great bull rider in the rodeo like his father was. But Layne knows how his mother feels about the bull riding. His mother will not let him ride the bulls because she is only trying to keep him from getting hurt. In spite of his mothers words and feelings about the bull riding. Layne has been sneaking behind his mothers back and has been riding the young bulls at his friend's farm. But in order to make it to the rodeo he will need some practice. So his friend's grandfather is willing to train him and get him ready for the rodeo. There is a couple set backs in getting to the rodeo, but he finally gets there. He gets a tough bull to ride but he does well. As he gets done with his ride someone shows up, a little mad but also very proud. The crowd goes wild. He had a great ride.People have life long dreams, but you should also in mind your friends and your family. Do they approve of what you want? Is your dream something that could worry them? And will it hurt them in the end. These are some things that you should think of before you go through with it.If you want a book that is a quick and easy read, but one that gives you some action, this would be a great book for you. This book is great for a person who likes a little action and drama. Also if you like animals this book would be great.

I choose this book and others by this person as I had the great opportunity to have meet this lady and I started reading her books to see what she wrote about. I very much enjoy her writing they are for young people but I find at my advanced age I still enjoy them. They are shorter reading then most books. You get right into the story and people

The author makes a quantum case for the existence of God and justifies it by saying that the Bible can be interpreted from a quantum point of view. He equates belief in God with belief in the Bible as being the inspired word of God. He fails to take into account that many people believe in God, but see the Bible as only the words of men. Muslims believe in God, but not entirely what's in the Bible. They see the Quran as being the inspired word of God. The author also sees God as being a Trinity. Jews believe in God, but not as a Trinity. This book didn't need all the Bible quotes. He could have spoken of a Supreme Being without limiting himself to writing as though Christianity and the Bible are the norm for an understanding of God. Additionally, the awkward insertion of inane humor was unnecessary and demeaned a serious and important concept for understanding the possibility of the existence of a Supreme Being who created and sustains all that exists.

Having previously read on quantum physics and string theory, this book brought everything into wonderful focus for me. But even with no previous entry into these subjects, a reader will find this book written to reduce complex scientific issues to comprehensibility, inviting continuing study. The fact that our universe and its physical study is a source of revelation of our Creator and his omnipresence in it should not be surprising for anyone pursuing knowledge of God. Yet for those who have doubted God’s existence due to lack of evidence in our familiar 3-dimensional plus time world, this book supplies the vast accumulation of scientific data that affirms the possibility of God’s existence. Dennis Zetting makes it an enjoyable and enriching adventure.

I would have rated this book a 5 STAR had it expanded further into how the QUANTUM World supports Biblical events and truths. The subject needs more pages. LOTS more.The author's illustrations describing the mysteries of QP were quite helpful.I would have preferred the author to have taken a DIRECT aim at antheists rather than soft petal his argument. I felt the book wasn't written for those of biblical Faith.Phil Mason in QUANTUM GLORY wrote directly to a believer. A much more insightful book. Don't get me wrong, Zetting no doubt accomplished his objective. If anything, he should not have been so sensitive as not to rattle the atheists.I suggest the author follow up with a book on QP and String Theory but this time center his goal on believers. Besides, only the Spirit and Word can bring an atheist into the Kingdom. A secular and scientific argument won't do it.To Mr. Setting I suggest he focus his books on EDIFYING the BODY of Christ. Ideological or scientific arguments concerning God do NOT edify the BODY.This book will only WHET the believer's SPIRITUAL appetite. It's a start, perhaps, but the author needed to do more.Go ahead interested reader and buy the book. But understand this: you will certainly come away with a hunger for a much deeper search into the QUANTUM World. The journey will be thrilling as you gain more and more knowledge on the subject.Mr. Zetting, write again, but this time go deeper and focus on biblical believers. Feed their appetite, and forget the atheists.

I really enjoyed this book! Even though I am not a science buff, in fact have little science background, this book was accessible and very stimulating. Although a few things were too technical for my full understanding, I was able to get the main ideas and follow the thought process. I appreciated the humor and efforts to make it so readable. In fact I bought a paperback copy to share with others.Thanks for a great book.Julie

Dennis has written a great book putting together science and God. It was easy to understand from a Christian perspective and an intellectual book for a scientist. Bringing those two together is a piece of cake for Mr. Zetting. This book would be an awesome mandatory reading for any beginning scientist or Christian. Bravo Dennis!

I did not read all of the book. If you already are a Christian, the book is a no brainer. I do recommend this book for the facts it gives and is very well written.
