The1st recipe I tried "Candied Ginger and Peach Scones" was the one that prompted me to purchase the book. It didn't mention how much, when or how to incorporate the peaches into the recipe. I emailed the author and she promptly replied back '1 cup diced'. Okay, no problem. I proceeded to follow the recipe, however there are other errors....it takes much longer to cook than the 15 minutes in the instructions, also the entire 3/4 cup of heavy cream listed in the recipe was way too much to add to the dry mixture...and later on the author directs you to use the remaining heavy cream to lightly brush the top before placing it in the oven....what remaining heavy cream?...you had me add it all to the dry mixture and it was a total mess that required significantly more flour than it should have to knead it before it could be placed in the skillet.I was able to salvage it by compensating for the omissions/errors, but it was frustrating and time consuming.I'm reluctant to try any more of her recipes, as it doesn't appear that they were kitchen tested or at the very least edited by someone that actually knows how to cook. I sense that I wasted money on this book.

I am delighted with this book. If nothing else the information about seasoning the cast iron, along with the appropriate cleaning instructions has given me confidence to pull out my skillet and put it to use. To me, that alone was well worth the investment in the book. Additionally, the PEACH AND BLACKBERRY UPSIDE-DOWN CAKE was so good that I made three more (with variations) after the first one. My cast iron pans are now becoming the first ones on the stove and in the oven.

I don't know what sour 'SS' is talking about. I bought the Kindle edition of this excellent cookbook because I wanted it right away. Then I sent the print edition to a friend in Minneapolis and got a free Kindle edition, so now I have two! I have only made a couple of the recipes so far [spicy juevos rancheros and the crispy chicken thighs] but they were both delicious. Next is going to be the day boat scallops, but it's really hard to decide because everything sounds and looks so delicious. The recipes all seem pretty easy and don't require multiple trips to the market. The best thing about this cookbook is virtually every dish can be made in one skillet. I think I am going to buy a smaller skillet to sit on top of my larger one so I can more easily make those gooey grilled cheese sandwiches that I love so much! This cookbook is a real value and beautifully designed. I have already sent another friend, a real foodie, the print edition too. I wish I could share my Kindle version as well!

I've been cooking a loooong time and consider myself a true foodie. It's not often I get too excited about a cookbook, and even more rare when there are so many recipes in it I can't wait to try. I first bought this as an ebook, and then had to buy a hard copy so It wouldn't be lost in the cyber-sea of my iPad library. Oh.my.gosh. The recipes are so good!

Love the book and its easy recipes. No photos of the food though which I think for a cook book is a must as I have no idea what the finished product would like. Luckily I am a good cook but for novice cooks a cookbook with no photos is not easy to follow.

I am a serious griller and smoker of meats and cast iron skillets are very useful additions to the "tool kit". This particular book is excellent and as a first recipe I suggest the "Cheddar-Jalapeno Skillet Cornbread with Fresh Corn and Scallions". It hardly gets any better than that!

All of the recipies I've tried so far have been delicious. Liberal use of herbs make these meals a bit more sophisticated than some, but not more difficult. Instructions are clear. Table of contents is a little awkward in ebook form, but it is worth the effort to figure it out. The soups and stews work just as well in a Dutch oven if you have one.

Pretty pictures and does give nice directions on care and recipes but when I purchased this book that reads "home skillet", I expected home cooking type of meals- not make once in a while because it's for "special" types of meals. Guess I was looking for cabin type recipes for gravy, regular corn bread etc. not breakfast clafoutis recipes.

Excellent book, very informative.

This book is short, easy to read, with a quick review over most exotic animals you are likely to encounter in a clinic. However, It is not terribly throughout and mostly an introduction.

I felt very alone until I found out there was a name for someone like me. This book is a must read for kids who have grown up in a culture and country different from their birth country. I met the author, David Pollock, at a Woodstock School (boarding school in India) reunion many years ago. He gave a talk about Third Culture Kids. I had never heard that term used before. It was a very moving experience to have him describe exactly how I felt. He absolutely understood me.A person who has lived their entire life in one place has no idea the emotional turmoil of one who has lived their formative years in another country from their parents' (birth) country. I went through culture shock when coming home (to the U.S.) for college. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been through this experience. You will know you are not alone and it will help you to heal and understand your emotions.

Why didn't anyone tell me about this book 10 years ago? This should be required reading for all State Department, DOD, corporate, and any other families moving overseas.- A bit dry in the beginning.- Has stories sprinkled throughout the book.- Great practical suggestions on how to make transitions from country to country.- Section about making choices about education overseas.- Section about repatriating.- Gives resources if you want to connect with other ex-pats.*** The Kindle version: Although it needs a better edit, it isn't nearly as bad as another reviewer made it out to be. (Goodness! When I'm limited to only being able to ship 7,400 lbs, Kindle books saves room for more homeschooling books!)

Third Culture Kids are children reared in a country other than their passport - they develop a cultural identity that is neither multi-cultural nor bi-cultural but is rather a third culture. Parts of their parents' culture, which they pick up from home and/or an international school situation and parts of the culture in which they are living are co-mingled in such a way as to form a third culture in which they live and that is unique to each person; yet when a third culture kid meets another third culture kid, regardless of background, there is an immediate recognition and immediate kinship. There are some fundamentals, however, that are characteristic of all third culture kids. Common characteristics are a 1) cross cultural lifestyle, 2) high mobility, 3) expected repatriation somewhere, and 4) often a system identity with the sponsoring organization/business/ministry. A TCK can be a military brat, a missionary kid, a business brat, a government brat, a global nomad. All third culture kids have a broadened world view, often speak two or more languages, are often cultural bridges for others, have a feeling of rootlessness - home is everywhere and nowhere - and a sense of belonging with others of similar background. Third culture kids struggle with identity and experience grief - often unresolved. They are usually two or more years ahead academically and two or three years behind socially. Van Reken broadens the concept of Third Culture Kids to include Cross-cultural kids and does so in a way that is scholarly and practical. This should be required reading for everyone interested in cross-cultural studies/cross cultural families and who would like to understand children reared cross-culturally within their own country and those reared outside their home country. Expatriates should read this book as well parents who are rearing children in a cross-cultural situation (ethnic minority parents; immigrant parents; mixed race parents, parents who adopt from another nation, and parents who move often from one region of the U.S. to another.)

This book is invaluable for anyone who is or cares about a third culture kid (TCK):  one who has "spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents' cultures".  This experience is common to children of missionaries, parents who work for international corporations, foreign service, aid organizations, educators, media representatives, military service, or whatever takes them out of their home country for an extended period of time.  This TCK experience can also happen actually to children who remain in their home country but live in a different culture within it, e.g. those whose parents work on an Indian reservation in the U.S. while not being born to that culture.Many of the differences the reader would probably be aware of, such as differences in eye contact, handshaking, pointing and other mannerisms.  I remember walking out of a training about Native American communication where we talked about the fact that direct eye contact can be a sign of disrespect to elders in that culture, and having a conversation with a young man who made no eye contact with me.  My whole body strongly said "he's lying or hiding something" - not to be trusted.  I could THINK all day long about those differences, but had to be sure to pay attention to the responses my body was having and not react based on my ignorance.  The authors of this book go more deeply into the effect these differences have on relationships, self-esteem, isolation, etc.  Other issues addressed are, e.g. how does one form deep attachments with those around them when they know they are always separated eventually.  There is no payoff and lots of pain in forming attachments.Another example of an unforeseen difficulty certainly is education. One Finnish young man grew up in Taiwan, and chose to complete his post-secondary education and med school in Chicago. English was spoken in all of his schooling and he would have had to compete with Finnish students who had been educated in Finnish to get into med school in his home country, and didn't think he would qualify.  He has realized it would be very difficult for him to EVER return to Finland to practice medicine.  He does not have a medical vocabulary in Finnish and would be looked down upon by his colleagues for having trained elsewhere.Restlessness is not a small factor in the lives of TCKs as adults, regarding relationships, careers, and just living arrangements.  The norm is to migrate and they would need to look very carefully to determine if it was really time to leave or rather a need to work on the relationship or job and NOT leave.  The problem seems to manifest in either the extreme of needing change often, or not ever wanting change again.  One woman married a man with about 8 jillion stamps on his passport, thinking they would enjoy a lifetime of travel, only to discover that he never wanted to leave the country again.This book does talk about the advantages of being a TCK also, altho some of those things are probably more well known.  Obviously an increased knowledge and experience base is  an advantage, along with some social skills developed from the need to meet new people.  What comes up for me is that that is the person I want in a staff meeting, able to bring different perspectives.  Also, a TCK often has a worldwide network of friends.  TCKs of course have their own culture with other TCKs when they get together, which can be very helpful for them.  The authors look at both weaknesses and strengths that develop for many TCKs  and offers some helpful ideas for dealing with some of the grief and loss issues.  I personally found this book to be very interesting reading whether or not the reader has a personal interest in the issue.  5 out of 5 stars.

I had been pro-choice for many years. I was fully indoctrinated during high school and college years with the women's rights movement and all its tenets; one of the principle ones being a woman's right to end a pregnancy. This little book "Why Pro-Life..." led me to see that abortion is killing and it is a morally reprehensible act. I am grateful to Mr. Alcorn for presenting the facts on pro-choice and the harm it does to both babies and their mothers. Human life is precious and to be preserved, not taken.

I challenge you to read this book, the whole thing, and still come away as Pro Choice. It amazes me that in this day and age people are freaked about things that might be in their food, but yet willingly take birth control without having any idea how it works. It does not prevent the egg from being fertilized, it prevents they fertilized egg from implanting, which is basically an abortion.

Book claims to be not religious reliant and fact based.Sadly basic references are heavily taken out of context, or misleadingly linked to an ideology.Was looking for an insightful book, this was just more of the same, and doesn't help the discussion.It'd be nice if someone authored a non-emotional book on the idea and used data rather than faith to make some points.The 2nd star comes from the references they used that were gallop surveys and couldn't be taken out of context. I learnt a lot from those sections, but they were the minority.

This is a brief and concise volume, not intending to be exhaustive but introductory to the issues of abortion. That being said, it is adequate in conveying the core concerns of the pro-life community. There's also possibility for further study based on all the works cited. For the price, this is the best book to recommend to someone exploring this consequential issue.

Randy Alcorn does not waste any words, he gets right to the point and explains things in a clear and concise way. I already agreed with the pro-life position, but if you want to be able to defend the opinion this is a great resource to do that. Randy's approach in this book is strictly secular even though he is a favored Christian writer, clearly the position does not require an appeal to God when talking about a good reason to kill a baby. He also considers women who may have already had an abortion and need to hear that God does love them and will forgive them. It is a good read.

Book is an excellent read. Well written by Randy Alcorn. Provide substantial insight as to how government and other parties interested in supporting abortion and research rights manipulated the public through elimination of words such as described in the fetus as a human being, or a baby. Tks!

Randy Alcorn provides a fair and honest review of arguments for abortion and the pro-life rationale that counters each of these arguments. This is an excellent resource for a pro-life individual to educate themselves on the issues as well as for anyone who is pro abortion or on the fence. It reads quickly and is very straight forward.

If you're pro-life, read this. If you're pro choice, read this. If you don't know where you stand, read this.
