I finished reading this book and I really enjoyed it. It was very fun and very educational about the weaponry, technology and vehicles used by the United States Colonial Marine Corps (USCM) and I recommend this book to those who like the United States Colonial Marine Corps (USCM) and the Alien franchise and/or series.
I don't know how I missed getting this book back in the 90's but this book given to me from my wife as a Valentines gift, pretty cool! Now this book should go with the fans of the original Alien movie and Aliens movie. This book delves into what the Colonial Marines are, their mission (or what political entities tell them their mission) and what equipment is at their disposal. Also there are excerpts from Marines that openly talk about equipment or what missions they have been on. Kinda funny but a lot of the excerpts sounded like how actual military members talk while doing their stint in the military. Great book and at this price, it will look nice in a media room/HT room or on a coffee table for that Alien fan!
Its a great book to have in your ALINES stuff! Gives you all the nuts-and-bolts details about Colonial Marine weaponry, vehicles and uniforms. I myself am not a big fan of weapons and minute details, but for this I can make an exception! The book has very little to no reference to Alien 3, which I appreciate tremedously since I hate the third movie so very much. An attempt is made to understand what happend to the marines on LV-426 and with the alien attacks, which is interesting. There is some interesting things about the Sulaco I found fascinating, like the ship having been in a docking accident pror to the last mission. If you like James Cameron's movie and the marines, you will love this, too!
Invaluable (fake) technical information for fans and fan-fiction writers in the Alien franchise (Weyland-Yutani era). Sound technological approaches with the small arms, explosives, and support weapons (like USMC tanks, which were never featured in any movie thus far) are presented, along with unique views, like firing the M56B Smartgun while lying parallel to the ground. Space combat is covered with a horrifically brusque and no nonsense approach - if you are expecting something like "Star Wars" or even some of the earlier (pre-JJ Abrams) "Star Trek" movies, then you can kindly GTFO. This technical manual grounds itself into as much reality as we know it back then, and much of it still holds true today.Sprinkled throughout the technical sections and tables of organization (we learn the Colonial Marines have three operational divisions, for example) are snippets of Colonial Marine radio chatter and a corporate espionage team trying to find out what was the nature of the "thing" found on the planet in Aliens (the second movie). With this technical manual and the excellent Dark Horse crossover, Alien Vs Predator (with Mariko Noguchi and the plight of Prosperity Wells), most people should have a solid grasp of the Weyland-Yutani governed corporate universe. While much of it is pleasant enough, not everything is benevolent.
I'm pretty sure the other reviews are excellent in the description of this books content. For myself I've always wanted to pick this up but usually you could never find it below $70. I was fortunate enough to get a AEV colonial marine kit sometime ago and looking for any reference material on the various uscm equipment was kinda a pain. This book truly provides all the reference material I needed to complete and detail the kit. Now I have a OUTSTANDING colonial marine for my display case!I haven't read it yet (I've read some small parts) but the book is chock full of great uscm insights, and story. I'm looking forward to reading it from front to back!
I am a Marine and this book was writen either by a Military Officer or someone ith a good understanding of us. It has spcific technical data that deminstrates a deep understanding of the Aliens universe and the back story of the Colonial Marines. Alot of infomraiton on the colonial Marines, but almost nothing onthe Aleines or any other aspect of the films. The book is a bit dry, if your not a military member or a Marine you may want to skip this book
Some years back I sought a copy of the colonial marines tech manual but everything I found was an out of print book that were pushing over 100 bucks so I resigned myself to never getting ahold of one. My luck held when the publisher started offering a reprint of the original. Its very good quality paper first off and I'm pleased with it its exactly the same as the original and I'm pleased to have it in my collection as a sci ti buff
Lots of great detail on the weapons and equipment of the Colonial Marines, lots of great illustrations, too.
