Love it and I consider it a huge personal achievement to complete the second Comedia Cantica. A rich church today is just as likely corrupted and degenerate as it was a 1000 year ago when Dante's despaired over the corrupt papacy which he reflected that prominently in his Inferno and Purgatorio. A book I would not want to die without reading it because it has raised my consciousness of the process of sanctification, a necessary process to purify oneself in preparation to meet our perfect Maker. Before reading The Purgatorio, the concept of purgatory was entirely foreign to me even though I am familiar with the Bible and am affiliated with the Presbyterian church. That's because the Bible does not talk about purgatory, only sanctification while true believers are alive and they never ever reach perfection until the day they die. The Purgatorio is extremely difficult read without help for a first timer because of the poetry, ancient history and mythology in the text. Hence the excellent annotations and scholarly notes at the end of The Purgatorio from learned translator like John Ciardi has enhanced my enjoyment of Dante's purgatory infinitely. The images from paintings related to Dante's works I obtained from the internet were also critical in helping me with visual imaginations because imagery is an essential element in enjoying Dante. Purgatory is one aspect of Catholicism I found appealing although I wonder whether priests take liberty of sinning because they think it is possible to reach paradise after doing time in Purgatory. Compared to Inferno, Purgatory has much more biblical references and Dante's interpretation of them. Although written about 900 years ago, I was curious with Dante's biblical views compared to mine. A good knowledge of the bible is undeniably absolutely essential to full appreciation of The Purgatorio. Having climbed the peak of purgatory, my next stop is the final segment of The Divine Comedy, Paradiso.

For a long time I had been meaning to read the John Ciardi translation of The Divine Comedy. I had read several other translations. I also happen to very much enjoy Ciardi's poetry. I had started the Ciardi translation of the Inferno and then shifted to the Anthony Esolen translation which I had read before and do enjoy. I read the Ciardi translation of the Purgatorio and find it good but not great and find some confusions which the translator admits to. I prefer the Alan Mandelbaum translation, that of Mark Musa or Esolen to this by Ciardi. Recently I read the Paradiso, starting with the Ciardi translation and then at Canto 5 shifting to Esolen.

Read this in college, had it on my Kindle then, wanted the physical copy in my hands. While it is not as fascinating or mind boggling as Inferno or Paradise, Purgatory is a solid journey with interesting people as Dante continues on.

I truly enjoy reading the classics. However some classics must be translated. Some translations loose meaning since you can not translate word for word. Only the meanings can be translated and with the evolving English language sometimes words can have skewed definitions. John Ciardi is the best Dante translator I have read. Signet has done a good job at this price point. The Devine comedy is a book set that will expand your understanding on many uncannonized ideas. The Inferno (Signet Classics)The Paradiso (Signet Classics)The Purgatorio (Signet Classics)

"The Purgatorio" was translated by the American poet, John Ciardi, and is accompanied by copious notes. If you want to plunge further into Dante you can, but it is by no means essental! I would give this ten stars if I could.

The poet makes a fine companion and guide through the difficulties of Dante. The balance between poetry and meaning is good, and evokes the original without requiring a course in the politics of the fourteenth century.

This is an excellent translation but it is a shame that the editing is so poor with typos throughout. Don't let them stop you reading it

The book was interesting. It was a bit inaccurate to the Conan Doyle Canon. Apparently Goldberg decided to recycle an old character of his and put her into the Holmes mythos without being a fan of Holmes. He got many dates and event in Holmes' life wrong. The story was typical in the fact that it was another general mystery novel with SH attached to it. While the character of Watson was well done, the rest of the characters seemed two dimensional. The love interest between Jr and Joanna was so obvious that it failed to be spectacular.The story was.....Hmmm.....I just read this book three weeks ago and I already forgot who the murderer was and why. I will have to Wikipedia it and remind myself.And, please...why do so many people think that Holmes was secretly in love with Irene Adler? When Holmes referred to her as the woman, it was not "If I were ever to love a woman, it would be her." It was "That witch....she is the one woman who got the best of me!"Not a bad read as far as a general book goes, but it fails to live up to the Holmes legacy.

This was an enjoyable read but a bit on the light side, On thing that stood out was that the author of a Doyle/Holmes derivative novel was apparently so unfamiliar with the Holmes canon that he mistook Holmes retirement date of 1903 for his death date when stories such as The Blanched Soldier and His Last Bow occur after this date and clearly have Holmes alive until at least 1914.

I am generally well-disposed towards homages to classic authors and characters; however, for an homage to be successful it has to present the characters in a way that makes them convincing to fans of the classics. In general, Mr. Goldberg manages to capture believability in Dr. Watson and Watson’s son. He even does so in his most important creations—Joanna Blalock and her son, Johnnie—Holmes’ supposed descendants from a night with Irene Adler. Unfortunately, he ruins the illusion with a couple of easily correctible mistakes.In chapter 3 (p.36), he has Joanna say, “An object falling through space drops at a speed of thirty-two feet per second” but, as any decent student of high school physics knows, objects accelerate at 32 feet per second squared. Her calculation from this is also significantly incorrect as, instead of a dead body falling 160 feet in 5 seconds, it would have fallen 400 feet. And this incorrect information is coming from a person Mr. Goldberg is asserting has a better mind for facts than Holmes. Worse, the correct information would have worked as well in the novel as the incorrect information. I nearly put down the novel here, but I kept going.In chapter 9 (p.109), the Watson’s go to get a dog, Toby Two, to follow a scent. This dog is supposed to be a pup of “Old Toby [who] passed on nearly five years ago.” Old Toby appears in The Sign of Four which is supposed to take place in 1888 while this novel takes place in 1910 (if we believe the text—p.3—and not the dust jacket flap). It is 17 years between 1888 and 1905. It borders on the impossible that Toby Two can be a pup of Old Toby. Now, though I am well read in the original Holmes, I am by no means the passionate expert that some are. There are Holmes references scattered throughout this novel, as one would expect. I worry that there are howlers worse than this one that real experts could pick out.Which is disappointing because, otherwise, there are things to enjoy here. There is no real mystery as the killer is known early on but it is fun to see the means and motives unraveled and the murderer ultimately taken down. It’s also rather pleasant to see the relationship between the young Watson and Ms. Blalock progress. Still, it’s hard to get on board with a mystery that contains such blatant errors and unlikelyhoods.

If you are a fan of Sherlock's deductive process rather than the detective as a person, you will probably like this book which sets the stage for the capers to continue into the future. If you wanted more character and forces of history, you will be disappointed.

The author has captured the spirit and atmosphere of the canon. The main characters work well even though there has been a generational change. Our Dr Watson is still present to chronicle the cases and also to serve as the link between the old and new generations. The plot draws from previous adventures in the canon but the author has done well in developing a credible new adventure based on old ones

As an avid fan of the Original Doyle this book brings back many good memories of his original method of operation. It is a very fun read and I recommend it highly. It is well worth it and very enjoyable and a great read.

One of the most enjoyable books I have read in a while. Love the throwback to Sherlock Holmes and Watson, through their children. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

I couldn't put it down! Lots of twists and turns with a happy ending. Definitely worth reading. I gave it 5 stars!

The advice in this book literally CHANGED MY LIFE. I know now that I am responsible for my own happiness. I have read many great motivating books by authors including Tolle, Thict Nhat Hahn, and Miguel Ruiz among others, and I truly feel that Luminita has written in such a way that I frequently find myself recalling her wisdom and applying it throughout my day to bring greater peace to myself and those around me.

I just finished reading Luminita's book and I highly recommend this book to anyone who has the courage to just let go and experience the best life has to offer. Luminita to me, has proven in her writing "15 Things You Should Give Up to Be Happy", that she has such courage. I have been on hiking trails when I was not sure which direction I take? The one thing a good hiker looks for are the correct trail markers in order to not get lost and to have a memorable and an enjoyable hike. Luminita has given us 15 important trail markers for for this path called LIFE and has given us wisdom through her own experiences "so you will immediately become conscious of the abundant life within you, and all of a sudden all kinds of wonderful things will start happening to you because of you." The wisdom in this book does not do the work for us, but like true accurate trail markers, they show us the best way and what to avoid so that on this path called Life. The path she is encouraging us to follow is one all full of love, happiness, and confidence. She also points out, as human beings, we are all in this together and we can put our faith, and trust in God, our Creator. Not knowing whats ahead, not fearing what is ahead and having complete trust that life will bring the best for us, better than we could ever have imagined. I have been following an internet blog written by The Purpose Fairy for about 4 years now. Norman Finkelstein has produced another thought provoking work which attempts to question so many of the ‘facts’ about this conflict.Finkelstein is a meticulous researcher and his conclusions demand serious thought and discussion. This book will not appeal to those who want a more ‘conformist’ view of the Middle East. It will be of interest to those who are eager to have a deeper understanding of the conflict and are less concerned with the ‘labels’; sadly in recent times the ‘labels’ seem to dominate all discussion about the Middle East. One is either ‘for’... or ‘against’..... Finkelstein goes beyond the superficial and questions the historical background with vigour and intelligence.

To me, two distinct issues predominate consideration of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. One of course has to do with the merits (whether political or moral) of their respective positions and claims. That is a most thorny issue, perhaps THE political Gordian knot of the 20th Century. The other has to do with the honesty and integrity of the arguments that are advanced for or against the respective positions. Many intelligent people rightfully feel uneasy about basing their arguments for or against the Jews or the Arabs solely on racial, religious, or ethnic grounds or on brute military power ("might makes right"). So they turn to history. Well and good - provided you get your history right, provided you don't allow your racial, religious, or ethnic identity to influence that history.This is where Norman Finkelstein and IMAGE AND REALITY come into play. Finkelstein's parents were both survivors of the Warsaw Ghetto and Nazi concentration camps. Yet his mother had, given her background, a somewhat surprising take on the Middle East conflict: her question was, "What crime did the Palestinians commit except to be born in Palestine?" A very trenchant question.In 1984, Joan Peters published the book "From Time Immemorial" which, essentially, denied that as of 1948 the majority of Palestinians had been born in Palestine. Peters's book was extolled in the United States. Among the members of the chorus were Martin Peretz, Barbara Tuchman, Saul Bellow, and Elie Wiesel. When published in Great Britain, however, the book was sharply criticized, even ridiculed, by scholars, and even in Israel it was dismissed as "sheer rubbish, except maybe as a propaganda weapon". Finkelstein calls it "among the most spectacular frauds ever published on the Arab-Israeli conflict" and as a threadbare hoax compares it to, ironically, the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion." One of the chapters in IMAGE AND REALITY is devoted to a painstaking critique of "From Time Immemorial", and it is devastating.Peters's scholarship and history appear to be so bad that her book might seem to be an easy mark, maybe even a straw man. But that's what makes so lamentable the reaction in the United States to the exposure of the flimflam. With but a few isolated exceptions, there was a massive cover-up among the liberal media. Of Peters's original endorsers, only two publicly acknowledged any lapses in her scholarship, and even they could not admit that her thesis had been discredited. Martin Peretz, editor-in-chief of "The New Republic", alleged that the critical attack on Peters was part of a calculated leftist plot. And then, after the beginning of the Second Intifada in 2000, "From Time Immemorial" was reissued here in the United States and soared to the top of the Amazon list.In the dichotomy of this book, Peters's thesis - that Palestine before the Zionists was "a land without a people" (and thus the pluperfect place for "a people without a land") - is the "image", whereas Finkelstein, in his chapter on "From Time Immemorial", presents the "reality". In other chapters Finkelstein addresses other "images", usually as presented in other noted publications: for example, that the Palestinian refugee problem of 1947-1949 was an inadvertent by-product of the war for independence and not an intended result; that the Zionist founders of Israel had benign intentions and did not envision or anticipate the use of force; that in both the June 1967 and October 1973 wars Israel was the unprovoked victim of Arab aggression. Finkelstein contrasts these images with what he contends is "reality".In these other image/reality pairings, Finkelstein is not as convincing to me as he is in exposing "From Time Immemorial". Part of the problem is that each of the subjects probably deserves book-length treatment. (This is also indicated by the copious and detailed footnotes - 82 pages of footnotes for 225 pages of text.) Another part of the problem is that Finkelstein's style is so tendentious. At times I question how fair and balanced he is. On one ancillary issue about which I happen to know a fair amount, he is neither fair nor balanced, and he "cherry picks" quotes to support his position. Furthermore, the book is not easy reading.No one should look to IMAGE AND REALITY for an overview of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is not intended or structured to be such. Further, it is now somewhat dated. (It was originally published in 1995, and though this second edition contains about fifty pages of new material it is now almost ten years old.) But the book is a valuable counterpoint to some historical propositions often taken for granted by Zionist Israel and its supporters. Before I espoused any of those propositions, I would first want to have read and carefully considered what Norman Finkelstein has written about them.

It was amazing to me that Israel was always cast as being in the right, and the Palestinians as being perfidious, low life, treacherous, unimaginative antagonists. How can things be so one-sided? Finkelstein provides a simple answer. They are not as simple and one-sided as Americans have been led to believe. A few specifics:Israel was not uninhabited when the Jews came in. Quite the contrary, it was rather fully occupied by Palestinians. Rather unsurprisingly, they did not exactly welcome the Jews. For the Jews to come in, Palestinians whose families had lived there for generations had to leave. The Jews used terror and atrocities to drive them out. Where did they learn these terror and atrocity methods? Simple. Hitler and Stalin had recently used them against the Jews. The ends justified horrific means.Israel's wars against the Arabs, even starting with their war of liberation, were wars of aggression by the Arabs, but the other way around. Israel's victories should be no surprise. They not only had the advantage in arms, they had the advantage of timing.I tended to overlook Israel's failings because I admire the incredible competence of individual Jews. They are very smart and industrious people. However, these admirable virtues do not offset the unconscionable act of having stolen their land from people who had lived there for centuries. Their incredibly artful propaganda, stemming from a nation of lawyers, only compounds the crime. If anything, we should hold such talented people to higher standards than others. They let us down.

For its small size this book possesses a wealth of resources. Finkelsteins exploration of the ideological continuity between America and Hitlers Nazi party is remarkable.I am amazed by those who claim Finkelstein is not "even handed" approximatly 1000 Israelis (half soldiers) and 6000 Palestinians (mostly civilians) have been killed. For him to give each account of violence equal time would clearly drastically distort reality, no pun intended. Finkelstein doesnt have to "portray" Israel as the aggressor, as Mr. Morris clearly shows in his work there was a well thought out plan of ethnic cleansing and subsequent deception on the part of Zionist leaders. All Finkelstein does is provide verbatim quotes of early Zionist leaders. It is against Ben-Gurion, Ariel Sharon and the like whom your anger should be directed against. They are the ones who have sullied Israels' image.

This book is a crushing blow to the popular literature on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Using meticulous documentation of the hoax of Joan Peter's From Time Immemorial to Michael Oren's Six Day War, Dr. Norman Finkelstein gives us the truth of whats really going on in the region. He shows the Zionist intent from the very beginning about how the partition is but a temporary solution to an eventual conquest of all of Palestine. Detractors of the book probably never read this book and cling to the popular myths of the conflict.
