Also the breakdown of them is very understandable and you don't get caught up in massive complicated explanations.Colin Willis goes in depth with each Hallucinogenic drug known today. He also discusses their affects on the human body. You be surprised what you find out.

This book provided a more extensive viewpoint on drug types, their side effects, plus pros and cons. It is a very interesting subject, especially LSD. I have used it myself and it was exactly how Colin Willis described it. The only drug I was hoping he would bring up is methamphetamine, for that acts like a hallucinogen too. I am Canadian and currently living in the United States. Coming from solidly lower middle class roots, I am certain that I never would have attended University if I had been born here. It accurately explains in detail a lot of what I have personally noticed about how class works in America. While Canada is only marginally better in terms of class mobility, I prefer living in a society where there is that margin and plan to move back if I have children. As an elementary school teacher here, I personally can testify to how segregated and unfair the public school system is in at least Washington, Oklahoma and Florida. Simply separating funding of public schools from property values would be a huge start. America is really mortgaging it’s future by not educating its youth just so that the wealthy can stay wealthy. I see countless missed opportunities everyday. Bright children capable of doing so much more but who will end up working meaningless jobs stocking shelves at Walmart or flipping burgers their whole lives simply because they were born in the wrong zip code. The one thing I found lacking was better data to support his conclusions. But then again it would have made the book less readable and inaccessible to a general audience.I bought a copy for my upper middle class in-laws hoping that it might make them understand at least why I wince every time they rejoice about getting coveted internships for their friends daughter/son by using this or that connection.

This is an informative and compelling look at the growth of income inequality in the US, but it presents only part of the picture. To begin with what's new and different in this book, it looks at income inequality in a different focus. Instead of zeroing on the one percent as so many have done, Reeves focusses on the 19% -- those whose incomes come in between the 80th and the 99th percentile, a group that he describes as the upper middle class. The incomes of this group have grown much faster than incomes for the country as a whole (if less rapidly than the incomes of the 1%). Moreover, income gains have been bolstered and protected by other benefits, political and social in nature. The tax deduction for mortgage interest and the 529 college savings programs, for example, mostly benefit the upper middle class. The children of the 19%, on average, attend far better schools than most American children, and are far likelier to attend and graduate from college. This is not accidental, Reeves argues. Upper middle class parents are fiercely focussed on getting their children the best educations possible, by restrictive zoning and legacy admissions as well as by intensive home support. It's a compelling argument, and we -- most readers of this book are probably members of the upper middle class -- need to recognize that the deck is stacked in our favor.But it's also an incomplete argument. An excellent review of the book in "The Economist" points out the basic problem of focussing on the 19% rather than on the 1%, saying "Since around 2000 the incomes of the upper middle class, excluding the top 1%, have not grown by much, and the income premium earned by those with university degrees has plateaued." Over that period, the income of the 1% has soared: in fact, since 2009, the 1% has copped about 95% of ALL income gains. Politically, focussing on the barriers that the upper middle class has established to protect it's position is an admirable goal. But so is focussing on the massive income gains that the upper class -- if we may so call the 1% -- has wrested from the system. All in all, this book is well worth reading, but remember that the 19% is only part of the problem.

This book analyses what Americans in the top 20% income brackets do to make their children the most qualified for the best colleges and jobs and how this causes inequality and lack of upward mobility. He does not say this is the only cause, with mass immigration of unskilled workers being another one. He proposes possible policy solutions and points out that many of them are opposed by both Democrats and Republicans. THe biggest potential value of this book for parents is that it is a primer of how to get your children into the best schools and jobs although it will be harder for you than somebody making $200K a year. I plan to give this book to my son for that purpose. You may not agree with the author that the current situation is unfair or agree with all his policy recommendations but it will be good for you to know details of the situation.

This book is genuinely about wealth (which to a great extent means white) privilege and the responsibilities that comes with these.What makes this topic so difficult is the fact that we feel like, there's so little we can do about the whole thing - I'm gonna give to the ACLU every month and just have to sit feeling bad that our parents' are going to leave us a million dollar house - Dream Hoarders offers real, tangible, put into motion tomorrow suggestions for how to negate the hoarding of privileges that the upper middle class is doing.Reeves is also pretty funny in that dry, I'm mocking you but you accept it because you like me way, that only British people can pull off so the book is enormously readable too (for a book on socioeconomics).

This book was okay. He makes some good points about the causes of inequality. But for some reason I feel like this is just half of a book. The same content is repeated in the 2nd half of this one...

TERRIBLE!!! Did NOT finish; LOVE Lee Child series, nice to read re characters he created in various Jack Reacher novels, BUT this woman can't write! plot drags on, illogical to the EXTREME (yes, many books require some 'suspension of disbelief', this one requires you to be gullible enough to fall for Nigerian internet scams every 10 pages).Started skimming early on, just got worse and worse.Amazon give refunds?

It was way too wordy, filled with unimportant details and frustrating ideas and conclusions that never materialized , very disappointing that "Reacher" never showed up in the book , I won't read another in the series

A good attempt but not anywhere near as entertaining as Lee Child's work. Repetitive and slow, this book can be ignored with no worry of disrespecting Jack Reacher.

Putting Jack Reacher's name in this novel is merely bait and switch. Neither the characher nor Lee Childs' energized prose are to be found in this knock-off. Don't wast your time.

A bit hohum..... too much description and not enough action.Story lacking destination..... tends to miss creating the tension for the reader with subsequent surprise elements.

The first book was good. The two short stories were OK. But this book has no deep plot, just chase Jack Reacher and/or his crew of military psychopaths. One plane ride after another. One hotel after another. Gets boring, you know. The author works in improbable audio/visual spying . It just wore me down all this nonsense. Time to give up on this series and wait for Lee to craft another classic.

Blah, Blah, Blah. The first half of the book just went on and on, with the two main characters (FBI agents) speculating about Jack Reacher and his whereabouts. About half way through, the book started to gain traction, forgot about Jack Reacher for the most part, and developed a decent story line on it's own. Okay read, hence the three star reading, but mostly just a Jack Reacher tease. This is the third book in the "find Jack Reacher" series, and so far, they have nothing on the man. Seems to me this author is simply making money off of a GREAT Lee Child character.

I liked it a lot but I could tell it wasn't written by Lee Child. Jack Reacher is Lee Child's star character so I tried it. If I hadn't read 25 books of Lee Child I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference. I liked it any way and it was a good plot well told. Reacher is a drifter with no belongings none, no house, no apartment, no car, no boat, lives in motel rooms. He goes into a cheap clothing store every few days and buys a shirt and a pants. He throws out his old cloths because he doesn't want to carry them. He uses cash and has his pension sent to a forward address where ever he happens to be. No cell phone, no utilities, no bills of any kind. So there is no way to trace him. Then with his super human skills solves the mysteries that are not solvable.

For many Jews and non-Jews, the Torah, the Talmud and other rabbinic writings have long been interpreted as saying that the Jews alone are God's chosen people. According to Sears (The Path of the Baal Shem Tov), such readings have led to a struggle among Jews between assimilation--losing their particular Jewish identity--and withdrawal--preserving their particular Jewish identity and surviving as a people. Sears contends that this struggle between particularism and universalism is often misguided, for he argues that the particularism of Judaism engenders a "model of spirituality and moral refinement that will inspire the rest of the world to turn to God of its own accord." In order to demonstrate the depth from which Judaism speaks in a universalistic voice, Sears collects a wide range of sources from a number of periods in Jewish history. In the section on "Judaism and Non-Jews," the Talmudic teaching of Rabbi Yochanan, "Whoever speaks wisdom, although he is a non-Jew, is a sage," urges respect for the wisdom of other traditions. In the section on "The Chosen People," two Midrash passages demonstrate the idea of Israel as spiritual model: "God gave the Torah to the Jewish people so that all nations might benefit by it"; "Just as the [sacrifice of the dove] atones for transgression, Israel atones for the nations of the world." Finally, in a section on "Messianic Vision," Sears argues that Jewish writings state that it is the Messiah's primary task to return the "entire world" to God and God's teachings. Even many people who are committed to Judaism often stress ritual observance but fail to place sufficient emphasis on Judaism's powerful universal concerns.In his very well researched, organized, and written book, Compassion for Humanity in the Jewish Tradition, David Sears takes a major step to correct this situation. The book is a compilation of translations from classic texts of Jewish thought, from Scripture through the Talmud and up to contemporary rabbinic leaders, on Judaism's teachings on how Jews should relate to other people. Since this review is for a vegetarian publication, I will indicate one example of a quote from the book that can be tremendously helpful in efforts to put the treatment of animals on the Jewish agenda:Love of all creatures is also love of God, for whoever loves the One (God) loves all the works that He has made. When one loves God, it is impossible not to love His creatures. The opposite is also true. If one hates the creatures, it is impossible to love God Who created them. (Maharal of Prague, Nesivos Olam, Ahavas haRe'i, 1)If aware of such a teaching, how could committed Jews square it with the cruel treatment of over 9 billion animals annually on factory farms prior to their slaughter for a diet that also has such negative health and environmental effects. Of course the fact that over 70% of the grain produced in the U. S. and 40% produced worldwide is fed to animals destined for slaughter while an estimated 20 million people worldwide die every year from hunger and its effects is also sharply at variance with many of the quotations in the book.What God must think of the widespread mistreatment of animals today is indicated in another of the book's quotes:This may be likened to an expert goldsmith who fashions a vessel with great skill, but when he displays his work, one of the people begins to mock and scorn it. How angry that goldsmith would be; for by disparaging his handiwork, one disparages his wisdom. Similarly, it is evil in the sight of the Holy One, blessed be He, if any of His creatures is despised. (Rabbi Moshe Cordovero, Tomer Devorah, Chapter 2).The very thorough and sensitive job that David Sears has done in this book makes it imperative that he obtain the financial means to complete another work in progress: a companion volume on "Compassion for Animals in the Jewish Tradition." For David has the background, wisdom, sensitivity, compassion, and commitment to animal rights to effectively challenge Jews to apply Jewish teachings on animals. As a Breslav Chassid, his commitment to Jewish law and tradition cannot be challenged. No one could claim that he is just one more animal rights advocate who doesn't care about Judaism and religion, in general, and is not concerned about human problems. Also. his knowledge of Hebrew and Kabbalistic, Chassidic, and other Jewish sources enables him to find teachings that are not commonly known. His authentic and powerful quotations would be a respectful but powerful challenge to the Jewish community that it would not be able to easily ignore.

Dovid Sears' Compassion for Humanity in the Jewish Tradition is an extremely important book. I cannot recommend more highly this work as an accessible, inspiring collection of citations showing the deep roots of universal tolerance and love of peace in the Torah and the writings of the Sages, and as expressed by contemporary rabbinical authorities. If better-known, this work could go a long way towards helping many alienated and disaffected Jews reevaluate the stereotype that classical Judaism is a parochial, chauvinistic, xenophobic system of belief and practice. Anyone searching for Torah Judaism's message of peace for humanity should start here.

The source material selections and commentaries in this excellent book are infused with compassion and are especially important and inspiring at this time. These are teachings that can be of benefit for the entire world, if we but open our eyes and ears and hearts. Rabbi David Sears has done an extraordinary job!
