I have finished this absolutely fantastic book, I highly recommend it, I like Douglas Wilson, he always speaks brilliant things in a practical way.I love that he summarily rejected and rebuked the idea of being a, "nice", Christian but made it quite clear of the sheer laziness of that approach, especially since much of it is an attempt at social approval or fear of being what he, "cool shaming" but we Christians must remember that anything or anyone that is not with Christ, is against Him.He challenged Christian to develop a robust sense of humor, to not be offendable.The Rules for Reformers are as follows:1) Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever.2) Always remember the distinction between principles and methods.3) Reformers are conservatives, which means they must be prefer the concrete to the abstract.4) Reformers must cultivate a high sense of humor.5) Reformers must be combative.6) Reformers must play the long game.7) Reformers must be remember always that religion shapes culture, and culture trumps politics.I would encourage everyone to look up Douglas Wilson, he offers a different perspective on many of the issues of our day than the dichotomy that mainstream culture would like us to believe that there is.The fact is, the Christian needs to remember that we transform or reform the world by renewing our minds, we do this, by bringing every thought captive and to the obedience of Christ, because Christ is our hope and we must be able to give the reasons why He is our hope, thus be apologetist for Christ, the cross, Him crucified and risen again and that the only way to salvation is through Him and belief in His blood to justify us before God, and God's grace giving us faith to believe in Him, through His Word that is our sword to contend for our faith, the Spirit for our sanctification and for, by, and of the glory of God and it is not work of men but solely the work if God.In a world of radicals, we Christians must be Reformers and transformers of this world, not conforming to the world, but conforming to the image of God and Christ Jesus.

This review is for my brothers. You know who you are. You know we have a fight on our hands, a fight you and I will be engaged in unto the approach of the twenty-second century of our Lord.Now, a fight we know we have, yet, if we're honest, we also have an abundance of directionless generals.That's why I recommend this book. Wilson is not directionless. He's not dull of eye and weak of spine. His nose is not brown from too many bendings over to rump-kiss the powers that be.I believe this book is the most useful contemporary book for those men who want to fight and fight well, for those men who want to spend their lives as reformers.

I rarely finish books these days. I spend most of my time in the Scriptures because the reading of many books there is no end, and it wearies the body. But books by Douglas Wilson are different. He points me to paths I’ve missed. I feel stronger in the Lord and in the Word because of this book. It was not a waste of time. You should read this book.The first 1/3 is easy to read for any Christian, the middle 1/3 is hard and will offend most Christians (including me), but press through it because there is mind changing wisdom here, and the latter 1/3 is encouraging.I give thanks to God for this book.

Excellent. Doug Wilson wrote a quotable and wonderful book here. It should be read by anyone who is interested in Christian cultural engagement. Many great quotes and interesting strategies.

A few minor proof-reading issues, but a genuinely encouraging and entertaining read. Very uplifting for a generation of Christians who need to hear that it's ok (and even biblical) to throw themselves vigorously into the task of changing the world. Wilson as usual is earthy, direct and unashamed to move from theology to action. While I may not agree with him on all the finer details, I feel like Wilson says many of the things I think but have felt pressured by the world around me to shut up and keep quiet about.Theological or economic liberals are encouraged to wear a seatbelt.

It is shameful how the evangelical community has ostracized and alienated Wilson from a "seat at the table." This work is a demonstration of why he has created his own table with a greater prophetic voice than his naysayers.

Wilson cheerfully exposes and dismantles the opposition's strategies, and follows this up with a rebuilt gameplan for Christians, based on the truth of the Gospel rather than the Enemy's false narrative.

I am Canadian and currently living in the United States. Coming from solidly lower middle class roots, I am certain that I never would have attended University if I had been born here. It accurately explains in detail a lot of what I have personally noticed about how class works in America. While Canada is only marginally better in terms of class mobility, I prefer living in a society where there is that margin and plan to move back if I have children. As an elementary school teacher here, I personally can testify to how segregated and unfair the public school system is in at least Washington, Oklahoma and Florida. Simply separating funding of public schools from property values would be a huge start. America is really mortgaging it’s future by not educating its youth just so that the wealthy can stay wealthy. I see countless missed opportunities everyday. Bright children capable of doing so much more but who will end up working meaningless jobs stocking shelves at Walmart or flipping burgers their whole lives simply because they were born in the wrong zip code. The one thing I found lacking was better data to support his conclusions. But then again it would have made the book less readable and inaccessible to a general audience.I bought a copy for my upper middle class in-laws hoping that it might make them understand at least why I wince every time they rejoice about getting coveted internships for their friends daughter/son by using this or that connection.

This is an informative and compelling look at the growth of income inequality in the US, but it presents only part of the picture. To begin with what's new and different in this book, it looks at income inequality in a different focus. Instead of zeroing on the one percent as so many have done, Reeves focusses on the 19% -- those whose incomes come in between the 80th and the 99th percentile, a group that he describes as the upper middle class. The incomes of this group have grown much faster than incomes for the country as a whole (if less rapidly than the incomes of the 1%). Moreover, income gains have been bolstered and protected by other benefits, political and social in nature. The tax deduction for mortgage interest and the 529 college savings programs, for example, mostly benefit the upper middle class. The children of the 19%, on average, attend far better schools than most American children, and are far likelier to attend and graduate from college. This is not accidental, Reeves argues. Upper middle class parents are fiercely focussed on getting their children the best educations possible, by restrictive zoning and legacy admissions as well as by intensive home support. It's a compelling argument, and we -- most readers of this book are probably members of the upper middle class -- need to recognize that the deck is stacked in our favor.But it's also an incomplete argument. An excellent review of the book in "The Economist" points out the basic problem of focussing on the 19% rather than on the 1%, saying "Since around 2000 the incomes of the upper middle class, excluding the top 1%, have not grown by much, and the income premium earned by those with university degrees has plateaued." Over that period, the income of the 1% has soared: in fact, since 2009, the 1% has copped about 95% of ALL income gains. Politically, focussing on the barriers that the upper middle class has established to protect it's position is an admirable goal. But so is focussing on the massive income gains that the upper class -- if we may so call the 1% -- has wrested from the system. All in all, this book is well worth reading, but remember that the 19% is only part of the problem.

This book analyses what Americans in the top 20% income brackets do to make their children the most qualified for the best colleges and jobs and how this causes inequality and lack of upward mobility. He does not say this is the only cause, with mass immigration of unskilled workers being another one. He proposes possible policy solutions and points out that many of them are opposed by both Democrats and Republicans. THe biggest potential value of this book for parents is that it is a primer of how to get your children into the best schools and jobs although it will be harder for you than somebody making $200K a year. I plan to give this book to my son for that purpose. You may not agree with the author that the current situation is unfair or agree with all his policy recommendations but it will be good for you to know details of the situation.

This is a quick, overview perspective book. There are some unique points, but the actual content is probably better covered in Charles Murray's Coming Apart or Our Kids by Robert Putnam. However, I give Reeves credit for not holding back and providing some much needed honesty.

The most important part is that Reeves himself falls into the category he discusses, the top 20% of earners in the US.Because of Reeves' position this is not a book about guilt. It is a book about self-reflection on our society's idea of the "self made man". How self made are the children who have a golden parachute, and how much opportunity are we taking away from kids who maybe would have gotten that internship if you hadn't made that call? This book is genuinely about wealth (which to a great extent means white) privilege and the responsibilities that comes with these.What makes this topic so difficult is the fact that we feel like, there's so little we can do about the whole thing - I'm gonna give to the ACLU every month and just have to sit feeling bad that our parents' are going to leave us a million dollar house - Dream Hoarders offers real, tangible, put into motion tomorrow suggestions for how to negate the hoarding of privileges that the upper middle class is doing.Reeves is also pretty funny in that dry, I'm mocking you but you accept it because you like me way, that only British people can pull off so the book is enormously readable too (for a book on socioeconomics).

This book was okay. He makes some good points about the causes of inequality. But for some reason I feel like this is just half of a book. The same content is repeated in the 2nd half of this one...

TERRIBLE!!! Did NOT finish; LOVE Lee Child series, nice to read re characters he created in various Jack Reacher novels, BUT this woman can't write! plot drags on, illogical to the EXTREME (yes, many books require some 'suspension of disbelief', this one requires you to be gullible enough to fall for Nigerian internet scams every 10 pages).Started skimming early on, just got worse and worse.Amazon give refunds?

It was way too wordy, filled with unimportant details and frustrating ideas and conclusions that never materialized , very disappointing that "Reacher" never showed up in the book , I won't read another in the series

A good attempt but not anywhere near as entertaining as Lee Child's work. Repetitive and slow, this book can be ignored with no worry of disrespecting Jack Reacher.

Putting Jack Reacher's name in this novel is merely bait and switch. Neither the characher nor Lee Childs' energized prose are to be found in this knock-off. Don't wast your time.

A bit hohum..... too much description and not enough action.Story lacking destination..... tends to miss creating the tension for the reader with subsequent surprise elements.

The first book was good. The two short stories were OK. But this book has no deep plot, just chase Jack Reacher and/or his crew of military psychopaths. One plane ride after another. One hotel after another. Gets boring, you know. The author works in improbable audio/visual spying . It just wore me down all this nonsense. Time to give up on this series and wait for Lee to craft another classic.

Blah, Blah, Blah. The first half of the book just went on and on, with the two main characters (FBI agents) speculating about Jack Reacher and his whereabouts. About half way through, the book started to gain traction, forgot about Jack Reacher for the most part, and developed a decent story line on it's own. Okay read, hence the three star reading, but mostly just a Jack Reacher tease. This is the third book in the "find Jack Reacher" series, and so far, they have nothing on the man. Seems to me this author is simply making money off of a GREAT Lee Child character.

I liked it a lot but I could tell it wasn't written by Lee Child. Jack Reacher is Lee Child's star character so I tried it. If I hadn't read 25 books of Lee Child I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference. I liked it any way and it was a good plot well told. Reacher is a drifter with no belongings none, no house, no apartment, no car, no boat, lives in motel rooms. He goes into a cheap clothing store every few days and buys a shirt and a pants. He throws out his old cloths because he doesn't want to carry them. He uses cash and has his pension sent to a forward address where ever he happens to be. No cell phone, no utilities, no bills of any kind. So there is no way to trace him. Then with his super human skills solves the mysteries that are not solvable.
