Highly recommend this one! I loved this historical piece by Bruce M. Caplan and Ken Rossignol. From the Titanic's time of basically global peace into the depths of World War One (WW I) including the historic sinking of the Lusitania, this is a great book on the entire lead up to WWI and into the interwar period that follows. Many American historians, like their counterparts in journalism fall into the political trap and forget to tell it the way it was. The documentation process that they are supposed to serve often gets modified it seems - not so with Caplan and Rossignol's historical editing of the original Logan Marshal work, along with the great original war poster art from both the UK and the US. As a masters student of history, I highly recommend this book, not only is it an entertaining read, the history that is described is accurate, based on fairness and real literary principles. They did not sugar coat the facts, for example they covered the use of unrestricted submarine warfare, it was to have a major impact on World War I and it was one of the main reasons why America joined the war in the 1st place. Maritime blockades were also a fact of WWI, key also were early war sully chain and the always present economic factors, even including widespread abuses in factories including child labor. This book belongs in any history buffs library.

I first read this book in 1978 at the age of twenty. It literally changed my life. Shaeffer pointed me to the Bible, the reformation and the Christian world view for which he was such an articulate spokesman. He accurately described that most people "catch their world view like they catch colds", thoughtlessly. Every area of my life changed - my politics, priorities, goals, morality. Soon I discovered that Schaffer's home in Switzerland (L'Abri) had become a lighthouse for hippies, university students steeped in existentialism, and many other truth seekers who were spiritual casualties of the baby boomer generation. This book is a gem, one that lights the path on the narrow road.

Over half a century ago, Francis Schaeffer wrote this excellent book and gives one a tour of the history of Western civilization . A civilization with absolutes based on Christian morals, values and actions. A Western world that exploded with freedom and innovation from the Christian Reformation period we have just celebrated the 500th anniversary.Schaeffer takes you through the gradual decline of the Christian worldview and when he ends, which for this book was mid 1970's, you'll think his final warnings were written in the present 21st century.Global warming, Iraqi War, Homeland Security, ISIS and more that Schaeffer didn't have the exact name, but he certainly saw where we are today as a society and where it most likely ends as we know it.

This book gives an historical account of western society and its evolution over time through the lens of Christianity. Schaeffer examines philosophical thinking from humanism to nihilism and beyond, and how it's reflected in art and music. In all this he depicts a gradual move away from Christianity, and dire warning of the capability of authoritarian power when the Christian voice is no longer heard or influential.Many secular people dismiss the Bible as an aged text that isn't relevant to today's world (which is a shame, as the Bible beautifully and terrifyingly depicts the capabilities of human nature...again and again). If you live in western society and do not identify with Judeo-Christian values, please understand you live in a society that has been structured around such values. As those values disappear, external control will increase accordingly.This book is worth reading for the secular and the religious alike.

Outstanding overview of history and the role of the Christian Church. Dr. Schaeffer is an excellent historian and theologian and provides succinct and clarifying narrative that answers the question "How should we then live?" In answering his question he indirectly challenges us with two of life's most important questions: "Who am I?" and "Why am I here?" Too many critics of the Church point to the fallibility of human beings that have comprised the Church throughout history while never realizing that God has always sought the broken to help establish His Church. Even in our brokenness God waits patiently for our answers to life's most important questions.For better or worst, without Christianity, western civilization as we understand it today would not exist. Easy read that is worthy of your time.

One of the best books ever written. I highly recommend this book to everyone who is looking for a way to live a godly life in a very ungodly world.

Overall I liked this book because it made me more self aware of my own presuppositions and encouraged me to question the reasons behind my beliefs. I liked how he categorized worldviews into politics, religion, and philosophy. It was also helpful to see how each category affected the other. One aspect that sets this book apart from others is how Schaeffer shows how society’s worldview developed by looking how art changed, whether through painting, architecture, music etc. I would have never thought of this, but art does provide a clear window into the culture and worldview of a society. However, at times I felt that Schaeffer was reading too much into some pieces of art, but his conclusions were consistent with the cultural aspects of the time. I also liked how he connected each stage in history to the next, ending at his modern era. Schaefer describes the changes to worldview clearly and points out the common trait of biblical truth or lack there of. The book is also important because it clarifies some common misconceptions about the relationship between Christianity and the secular worldview such as how modern science was born out the Christian worldview. It is also important to notice that most worldviews are not just influenced by one aspect, but are influenced by many differing circumstances happening during that time. Additionally, some of those influences are not readily seen. I also liked how he points out the flaws in people’s worldview by critiquing their art. I thought Schaeffer’s conclusion of the 60’s and 70’s was spot on. He describes how they rebelled against their parents but with only the same two values: “their own kind of personal peace and their own kid of affluence.” The book is important because it traces the changes in worldview and allows the reader to better understand the world they live in and why people act the way they do. The proverb that Schaeffer uses is a good summary of why this book is important, “Forget the past and you’ll lose both eyes.”

Schaeffer does a solid job of reflecting and presenting ideas, historical facts, commentary, and art to start a discussion of how our current world found itself in its current state and that Christian's must find a way to interact with that in different sections of society including the church, art, the scientific realm, philosophy, and politics. Further research and analysis is needed after this book, but Schaeffer gives readers a good push in the right direction.

Humphrey Carpenter, who was given unrestricted access to Tolkien's papers, brilliantly puts meat to the bones of the Tolkien legend in J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography, offering a well-rounded portrayal of this quiet, bookish man who always saw himself first and foremost as a philologist, uncovering rather than creating the peoples, languages, and adventures of Middle-Earth. Carpenter chronicles Tolkien's early life with a special sensitivity; after losing both parents, Tolkien and his brother Hilary were taken from their idyllic life in the English countryside to a poverty-ridden existence in dark and sooty Birmingham. There were bright points, however. A social and cheerful lad, Tolkien enjoyed rugby and was proud of his gift for languages. It was also at this time that he met Edith Bratt, who would later become his wife. Academic life--both as a student and professor--is where this biography shines. Friendship with other men played a huge part in Tolkien's life, and Carpenter deftly reveals the importance these relationships--his complex friendship with C.S. Lewis, membership in the Inklings and the T.C.B.S.--had on the development of his writing. The only criticism one can make about this book is that Carpenter tends to gloss over Tolkien's contributions to comparative philology. True, there is a chapter devoted to Tolkien's academic pursuits, but it tends to skim too lightly over the surface for this reviewer's tastes. Philology is a terribly methodical science, and the author clearly did not want to alienate readers who were primarily interested in Tolkien as a storyteller. Still, it would be nice to understand why Tolkien was held in such high esteem by his fellow academics. As it stands, Tolkien comes off as a slightly eccentric etymologist. This biography of J.R.R. Tolkien was a birthday gift sent to me by my boyfriend. who knows I have read the Lord of the Rings many times as has he.Tolkien's biography is a journey much like his legendary tale. His beginnings are smple, and a his journey through life becomes an adventure . That help create such a spell-binging author.This biography is not stuffy and dry, sharing with the reader, rather it shares little glimpses of Tolkien's life throughout every stage. The author does a good job of giving the emotion that draws you just like a good novel.It is a book that will appeal to all fans of Tolkien's book. My personal opinion that this book would be helpful to students doing book reports.I know that it is one of a few biograghies which I will read again. So, it would also be my highest reccomended book to date.**Edited For Clarity

I have only read J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy and have obviously seen the films. The books are amazing in many ways and being able to read about the man behind them was a privilege. What's interesting is the amount into the time, effort and the challenges that Tolkien had with LoTR over the 16 years it took from writing to publication.Yet this book is far from being focused just on the LoTR. It provides a background of Tolkien's life from birth to death, his natural ability with languages, his family, the war, Oxford and being appointed professor at the age of 32 among many other accomplishments.This book is a very easy read and uncovers the intriguing life of J.R.R. Who was J.R.R. Tolkien? This question has been posed by many over the years, which may explain the plethora of books and articles written about him (especially in light of the Lord of the Rings movies some ten years ago).In 2010, I read Humphrey Carpenter's The Inklings. I've posted my review of that elsewhere on this site. J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography is of equal quality to that later work, though the primary focus here is on the creator of Middle Earth.The following are among the "new" insights I found in this work:1. Edith Tolkien, though a friend of Joy Davidman, felt jealousy over her husband's devotion to C.S. Lewis (perhaps in part because "Jack" was socially awkward in her presence).2. Though a perfectionist, J.R.R. Tolkien often experienced difficulty in focusing on a given task (which lead to frequent publication delays).3. Tolkien disliked the adaptation of the Catholic Mass into the vernacular from Latin.4. Tolkien's mother knew Latin, French, and German, and he related most closely with her side of the family. He and his brother were homeschooled by their mom at a young age, and Tolkien could even read by the age of four.5. Tolkien lost both parents before he was a teenager; a local priest, Father Francis Morgan, proved indispensable in filling a great gap in both Tolkien boys' lives.6. He treasured his friendships with other males from school days, time in the army, and career as an academic.7. J.R.R. Tolkien did not own a car after World War II. Thus, he had to arrange taxis for himself and his wife.8. He was grieved by the "different breed of men, less discursive, less sociable in the old way, and certainly less Christian" (239) who replaced his generation of scholars at Oxford.9. Tolkien's great works all developed in a different manner. The Simarillion was the first major story he began, but also the one he never completed. The Hobbit took the shortest amount of time to complete. The Lord of the Rings series suffered from endless starts and stops until he settled on its contents and publisher.This book contains simply some of the finest narrative storytelling one can find anywhere. Of particular interest is the section on "Tolkien's typical day" that parallels the "imaginary" Inklings meeting in The Inklings. There is also an insightful account of how C.S. Lewis came to faith in Christ through his friendship with Tolkien.

A completely wonderful book. I enjoyed reading it from cover to cover.I had already known a fair amount about Mr. Tolkien, bit and pieces gathered here and there. I even enjoyed his letters (again, compiled by his son Christopher and Mr. Carpenter)., but this book gave me more a glimpse into not only the daily life of Mr. Tolkien, but also his creative genius and his workflow. It was a delightful book about a very delightful, yet curious man. I only wish I could have known him in real life.

A very thorough look at the personal life of JRR Tolkien, and a good view of his writings, including some previously unseen. Every Tolkien fan should have a copy of this book, but I gave it only 4 stars because the writing style, at least for me, seemed a bit stilted. I found myself rereading passages because I felt I hadn't quite gotten out of them what I should have learned. It may just be me, though, so don't pass by this book on my say-so alone.

Carpenter's biography is excellent. It is a pleasant reading experience that focuses on the man and does not try to speculatively psychoanalyze his literary work, although the biographical facts can indeed help in deepening understanding of the literary work. For example, I, for one, learned the fascinating fact that Tolkien's priest-guardian, after his widowed mother's untimely death, was half-Spanish, spoke Spanish fluently, and let the young Tolkien peruse his Spanish books--facts that led me to consider more closely the parallel between Frodo and Sam and that other adventurous duo, Don Quixote and Sancho. Good biographies of writers give us the plain facts, without overmuch speculation, to enrich our reading and understanding of a writer's works. Carpenter has done exactly that. In Carpenter's other book which collects the letters of Tolkien, Tolkien remarks on his love of the Spanish language--more evidence for one more insight into this great writer's masterpiece.

I bought this after seeing Arrival in order to read the short story on which the movie is based (Story of Your Life). It was one of those rare occasions where I'm glad i saw the movie first and the book was a great accompaniment to what I saw on the screen. It really exposed a whole other layer to the story and filled in the blanks in a way that was complementary to the movie. Quite different from the movie in how it's told and in some of the details, but worked well. Sort of like two friends telling you about the same event from their individual viewpoints.

This is actually the first set of short stories I've ever read. Bit of background, I have a deep aversion to short-story collections, especially if it's by a mix of authors. Feels like eating a couple of potato chips and nothing more: frustrating. And indeed, that colors my review just a bit, both overall and also on a number of individual stories in this collection, but more on that later.OVERALL REVIEW: the collection is excellent. This actually feels a bit like reading a collection of Black Mirror episodes; each story is a sort of runaway exploration of a singular "what if?" concept. In fact, each story is written in a distinct style, especially impressive since these were written over the course of many years. Several are in first person, some are told in a distant, omniscient 3rd person, one is told in a confusing 1st and 2nd person narrative. Some are distinctly emotional and colored in vivid emotional tones, some are distant and cold and detached feeling. The stories run the range of ancient, Biblical settings to late 19th century, to modern day, to near future. But overall, this collection of short stories feels satisfying in the sense of each one being standout.Now I'll give short reviews on each individual story, spoiler free:TOWER OF BABYLONThis takes place in ancient Babylon, and is ostensibly historically accurate; all the place and people names are real. But this story centers around these ancient people improbably building an enormous tower to heaven, to LITERALLY open the vaults of heaven. The story is told from such a mechanically sound and realistic sense, with so much detail, that as the reader, you're more than willing to set aside some disbelief and go with the premise. The twist to this story is actually just as mechanically mindful as the rest of the telling of the story was, and despite the nature of it, I found it oddly satisfying and quaint.UNDERSTANDThis story, like Tower of Babylon, and most of the stories, starts out on solid footing before shooting into the sky. The premise is solid and instantly believable in today's world of medical breakthroughs, and involves a patient being brought back from a vegetative state with an experimental drug. But the drug results in some unexpected side-affects ... Ultimately, I found the ending to be bizarre and just about senseless. It's one of those endings that makes me wonder if I'm just too dense or slow to read into it enough to be blown away. That said, the author's literary style during the telling of the story is spot-on, perfectly illustrating through narrative structure the rapid changing of the character themselves.DIVISION BY ZEROThis is one of the less fantastical stories in this collection, but still uses a specific narrative design to tell a story both literally and figuratively. Of course, this story is also about math, one of my weakest areas, so much of the story kind of flew over my head. However, one of the two characters is not a mathematician, so this creates an opening for some exposition for the less versed readers. In the end, the story is not as much about math ... and I sort of got the ending to this story, but it's one of those things where it would probably help to discuss this with a reading club or a literature class to tease out all of the layered meanings.STORY OF YOUR LIFEThis is the short-story that is inspiring the movie "Arrival". It's also one of the more interesting and mind bending stories, since it switches narrative styles constantly, and involves flashbacks. Essentially (without spoilers, but this helps first-time readers), there are two time-lines: the main story, in which communication occurs with aliens, and various flashbacks. Making this more intriguing is that the main story is told in 1st person, but the flashbacks are told in 2nd person, in a strange sort of future tense. There's a reason for this, be assured. The eventual ending is emotional in a way I didn't expect and left me wondering about the implications set up. I look forward to seeing the movie version of this, because, like several of these short-stories, this deserves a full-length movie and/or novel adaption.SEVENTY-TWO LETTERSThis takes place in an alternate reality version of late 19th century / early 20th century England. It's hard to say, because the central premise is that the world is built on using combinations of the Hebrew alphabet (a 72 letter combination) to invoke a "name" to induce certain magical qualities in things. I know what I said must sound stupid, but like all of these short stories, the author sets this up in a way that is well grounded, logical, and believable enough for you to set aside disbelief. The author also does a fantastic job of adopting the type of language, slang, and style that would be appropriate for a story told in this time era, making it that much more immersive. That said, I thought the ending was too sudden and weak and like the central conflict was barely resolved.THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN SCIENCEThis is the shortest story in the collection, and is written in the style of a magazine article. Thus, it's also only a dozen or so pages in length. Therefore, this functions less like a story, and more like a bit of open-ended speculation on the author's part. This makes this entry the weakest and least satisfying in the collection.HELL IS THE ABSENCE OF GODThis is one of the more fantastical and imaginative stories in this collection. It's heavy on the religious speculation, but not preachy by any means. In fact, I liked this story for it's rather interesting and almost darkly comical depiction of a real-world Christian God and his angels. I can't say much more without spoilers, but suffice to say, I rather liked this story. The ending feels trite and odd, but I think I kind of understood it in the context of the rest of the story. And the author's narrative style is perfect, taking on a detached but wizened sort of air, like that of a classic parable or fable.LIKEING WHAT YOU SEE: A DOCUMENTARYThis story is told in a faux documentary style, like the sections are transcripts of recordings taking from various people being interviewed, along with a few news broadcasts and speeches. There is no back and forth question style here, but more like someone was asked to give their full-length thoughts on something and the story here is that. It actually works pretty well for the premise, which is that a neural implant is developed which deprives people of the ability to recognize facial beauty. This is actually based in true observational science of people that have suffered a brain lesion in a particular part of the brain that controls this. Anyway, the idea is interesting, and explored evenly from both sides of the issue, as to whether such a technology is good or bad. This is less a story and more of a work of speculative, train-of-thought type of story, but it's still very satisfying as a work of fiction.---Overall, I recommend buying this collection of stories. I'd love to see a few of them optioned as TV shows, movies, or full length novel adaptions (beyond just Story of Your Life / Arrival).

I got Ted Chiang’s “Stories of Your Life” because I saw the movie “Arrival” which is based on Chiang’s “The Story of Your Life” which is included in this volume. I admit I cheated and went straight to “The Story of Your Life” and when I read the rest of Chiang’s stories I found them as fascinating, innovative and as challenging as “The Story of Your Life.”Since I did jump to “The Story of Your Life” it approaches its subject, aliens making contact with humans deftly. Chiang makes the aliens, alien, not some anthropomorphic proxy that is supposed to be representative or illustrative of some human characteristic. Chiang is a writer who takes both aspects of the phrase science fiction seriously. The challenge of Louise Bank in “The Story of Your Life” is to find a way to communicate with the aliens, called heptapods. Chiang is well-versed in semiotics. In other stories Chiang very well distills mathematical theory (“Division by Zero”). However, he also doesn’t shy away from fantastic scenarios such as in “Hell is the Absence of God” which posits what the human race and faith would be like if God was a known entity and angels frequently visited earth or at least the physical plane and what their effect on life and lives would be, as well as the effect on faith.The stories included in “The Stories of Your Life” are so unique and exciting to read I was ready to recommend the book even before I finished “The Story of Your Life.” I’m glad I stuck around to read the other stories as well.

This is a hard one to review. First, I bought it after seeing and enjoying the movie. The movie is adapted from one of the short stories in this collection. First, the author is extremely inventive when it comes to fashioning novel situations or "could be" worlds in these stories. He then plays that novel situation out over the course of the story. As an example: what if you lived in a society where you could modify your mind so you couldn't recognize the pretty or ugly faces. An interesting idea that he plays out for 20-30 pages. But, as in most of these stories, when it ends I have no feeling of conclusion. Maybe it's my problem in that I like stories that leave me with an AHA at the end. These stories are a sort of "slice of life"-- well, a "slice of unusual life'. The characters and dialog are well written. So 3 stars says it's okay.

I went to the theater to see, "Arrival", I liked the movie so much I bought the book to see if it was even better: it is! I was surprised to find the book to be an anthology of short stories. I liked the other stories just as well.

I count this as one of my better acquisitions in the field of 19th Century firearms books. There is an awful lot of good, hard to find information packed within, including details on maintenance (including assembly/disassembly procedures), general use and loading instructions, specific load results with different powders, and observations on the quality of various reproductions. As the authors state early on in the book, they pull no punches when giving their honest assessment of the quality of the various reproductions out there.One also finds valuable suggestions on improving the reliability of various reproductions, such as gunsmithing tips for the pocket percussion revolvers to prevent cap fragments from binding up the cylinder. Very useful stuff.I also love the colour graphic on the cover - it immediately attracted my notice when I was skimming through the myriad "recommendations" on Amazon.I do have some suggestions for improvement for a 2nd edition, in the highly unlikely event the authors ever read this droll review and actually want to go for a 2nd edition...:1. There are a number of minor, but noticeable typographical and administrative type errors in the book, such as using "heals" instead of "heels." Basically needs a sharp-eyed editor to go through and insure proper word usage.2. While the black and white illustrations are generally adequate, they are a bit grainy (owing to the resolution and also, I think, the paper used) and are often too small. Indeed, some are actually quite tiny. This is usually not a serious problem, but in some cases when they are used to illustrate an important detail (such as the LeMat pictures on pp 144-145 and some detailed mechanism shots on pp 92-94) it is hard to make out what is being shown. In such cases it is a bit of a problem.I would suggest, then, that a 2nd edition of this fine work at least have larger and sharper black and white photos. Further, if possible, select illustrations should be done as sharp, full colour plates. One that comes to mind is the photo of an original Colt Walker at the beginning of chapter 12. I would have loved to see a full-colour, full-page plate of this wonderful firearm. Surely 6-12 colour plates, perhaps focusing on original firearms such as the aforementioned Walker, bound into the centre of the book should not be too great a challenge? At the least the cover illustration could be sharpened up a bit (it is great, of course, but could be a bit better).3. If possible, an appendix that goes into more detail of the various reproductions and their manufacturers, with discussion as to reliability, attention to detail, overall quality, etc.4. Also of great use would be an appendix that gave contact information for and brief descriptions of companies that make accessories, such as replacement springs, etc., for percussion revolvers. A further help would be a similar list of gunsmiths who specialize in repairs, tuning, etc. for these magnificent firearms.5. Something that may or may be of interest to the authors (and, thus, may or may not be within the scope of this book) are certain experimental percussion revolvers. For example, one company (Big Iron Barrels) can bore out Dragoons and similar revolvers up to .58 (!!!!) calibre (reducing capacity to five shots). Such conversions are unhistorical, but interesting nonetheless. If the authors were interested in this, an appendix discussing it might be in order.6. On a purely trivial note, it might be of interest to use 19th Century fonts (such as Baskerville Old Face) and formatting conventions on both the text and cover to give the book a more Victorian Era appearance. Not important, but it would seem to fit well with the subject matter of the book (and I did like the font used with the captions).I hope the foregoing does not give a negative impression of this treatise. If you are a percussion revolver enthusiast I think you will find this book very useful, and really ought to procure a copy for your collection.

OK, I bought this as a "how-to" for my "new" hobby, black powder revolvers. As such, it's OK, but still left some gaps in what I wanted to know. As I don't know any BP revolver shooters, I've had to learn this all myself, and this really didn't do that for me.But, as a reference book this would rate a SOLID 5 stars. This covers the topic from end to end and in depth. For this purpose the book is excellent. If that's your need, I highly recommend it.

I was very excited to order this book, as I am fascinated by the history of firearms. And in that respect, this book doesn't disappoint. It provides a pleasing overview of percussion pistols and revolvers that is quite informative, and I particularly enjoyed the authors' information on their modern-day testing of reproduction black powder pieces.However, the publisher really let the authors down - badly. Many of the photos in the book are much smaller than they need to be, making it difficult to see the finer details of the guns being discussed. As well, the captions and labels for the photos are in an archaic font that is extremely small and practically unreadable. Too, there are a number of grammatic and typographic errors that are jarring - clearly this book was not thoroughly edited and proofread before it went to press.Is this book worth buying and reading? Absolutely. If you have an interest in the pistols and revolvers of this time period, or their modern-day descendents, and you can overlook the typos and bad layout choices, this is a book you won't regret owning. I only hope that there will be improvements made in any subsequent editions of this book. If so, I'd happily purchase an updated version.

Nice little book, full of information about various types of handguns. I liked the opinion bits about various gun makers, the load charts for each gun, nice amount of information (including history)- even for a novice to the sport. I like the range test details and comparisons to modern weapons too.At least one reviewer mentioned the poor photographs, I don't remember the technical term but they're printed newspaper style (too hard to look at) and would be helped if they were larger. The old English script(why use that?)on these pictures is very hard to read at this scale, in one instance it's impossible. Fortunately the real information is in each chapter instead of the pictures.My biggest complaint is that while various gunmakers/ dealers/ parts suppliers are mentioned you don't get an address or website for any of them. Many of the readers of this book will already have these bits but they should be provided for the novice as well.

I would rate this book a 10 if the system let me. I worked with the dietician at my GI doctor's office to remove FODMAPs from my diet. The information I was given to reintroduce FODMAPs was confusing, overwhelming and lacking in specificity. This book lays out challenging and reintroducing FODMAPs in an easy format. There is no guess-work about which foods to try or how much of a particular food. I recommend this book to everyone I meet who is struggling with FODMAPs. It's even helpful to read before you challenge your body as you reintroduce FODMAPs to your gut.

Suffering from IBS at 31 was not a walk in the park by any means. I had constant stomach pain and bloating and had no real idea why. Finally a doctor suggested IBS and I was stunned, never realizing how IBS can affect individuals differently. After learning about the FODMAP Diet and the elimination process I finally started to feel better. I was able to do that the first phase entirely free, by following some blogs and Pinterest. However, the reintroduction phase is an entirely different story.I tried reading blogs; there wasn't enough information. Nothing on Pinterest. Nothing nowhere, except paying for a nutritionist, and I don't know about you, but my deductibles are just way too high. I discovered The Re-challenging and Reintroducing FODMAPS: A self-help guide to the entire reintroduction phase of the low FODMAP diet.I bought the kindle edition, so I could carry my kindle everywhere and constantly remind myself of my options when choosing items to reintroduce. The book itself is rather short, but it is a lot of information, so you will need to go back to it, multiple times. I'm very glad I got the kindle book.I have reintroduced about 4 of the high FODMAPS back into my diet, keeping a food journal for the first time in my life, to really keep track of my triggers, and I am just so grateful for this book to have helped me map all of this and make it through with very little ease.

The content is excellent (grammar corrections and editing would be useful). Contents are clear and easily understood. Page numbers would help as there is a subject list in the back of the pamphlet with page numbers that don't exist on the individual pamphlet pages. I went through the pamphlet and numbered the pages to match those of the content list. The small pamphlet is VERY helpful when attempting to reintroduce foods. Especially helpful was his notation that you may be more sensitive to foods now that you have been avoiding for some time. I had observed that and didn't know why this was the case. Apparently this problem has not been carefully researched to date.

I recently purchased the Kindle version. It is very well-written and research-based information. I now feel prepared to forge ahead with food reintroduction. I have supportive healthcare, but I don't have access to IBS specialists in my local area. The reintroduction process is complicated, and I actually appreciate the succinct presentation. I don't mind the cost because for me to be able to have this guide gives enormous benefit. My only challenge is that the charts are not able to increase font size as does the text on my Kindle, so they are a bit hard to read. Other than that, I am very satisfied with this purchase.

I am on the first week of re-introduction and this short book has answered so many questions. I am not working with a dietician, but my Gastro advised I try this diet.I found relief in days after starting the low FODMAP diet and was very pleased. Was terrified to start re-introduction and this book has quelled some of those fears. I am now looking forward to next week's challenge!

I have been working on getting control of my diet to help with my gut issues - hence trying Fodmap. I finally felt like I had the hang of it but didn't really know how to take the next step. This book really helped. I am now on my 5th elimination test and working my way through to the 10th. It made it easy to understand - much better than anything I was seeing online. You can get the kindle version for free if you have amazon prime but it made all the charts really small. I am very glad I got the book because I am daily referring to it. Great purchase!

My only concern is that Martin's protocol in some ways contradicts the Monash protocol for the elimination portion of the FODMAP program. Some foods that he includes in the challenge portion I have been eating throughout the elimination phase, such as green beans and broccoli. The charts of foods in each of the FODMSP groups have been very helpful to me in mapping out the challenge phase.

This refers to the Kindle edition. This is not a book. It is a very brief explanation of the challenge and reintroduction process. It's good information, but not worth $7.95. I couldn't believe how short this was! I actually returned it. It was more like something that you might find on a web page. A good web page, but not enough for a book.
