Gr 3-6-Scholastic is sticking to the formula it unrolled for the 2010 edition-mainly using photographs instead of drawings for illustrations and including modern vernacular, such as "chat room," and "mosh pit." Many of the pages in the 2013 edition are identical to those in the previous work. Entries are in neat, clearly defined columns and a large, easy-to-read font. Entry words appear in red and definitions are in black. The photographs are of remarkably fine resolution, possessing an almost 3-D quality and lifelike colors. This edition still has a 10-page thesaurus, grammar and idioms guides, a table of acronyms, a list of U.S. presidents, U.S. and world maps, and a table of world flags. Gone are the charts for the Braille and ASL alphabets, however. The few additions to this edition consist mainly of more word histories (users can now find the stories behind "grim," "molt," "relent," and "rummage"), and there are a few more photographs. Still in place is the use of phonetic pronunciation guides instead of the more academic use of symbols as guides. All in all, this is an attractive, modern reference, but unless your 2010 copy is in tatters, there is no need to invest in it.-Jennifer Prince, Buncombe County Public Libraries, NCα(c) Copyright 2013. Every day, our 9 year old constantly asks us how to spell words. When those questions are all you hear 24/7, your sanity dwindles. One day, after spelling several words for the kid, I cracked. I told the boy that he was getting a dictionary. This sparked a massive protest. He went from cute and sweet to the spawn of Satan. Each time I brought up that he was getting one, a tantrum would ensue. He'd claim that he doesn't need it, he won't use it, dictionaries are stupid etc. If he's asking my wife and I how to spell words it's pretty obvious that he in fact does need one. Anyways, it arrived quickly. The spawn cautiously looks at it and pretends like he's not interested, like a cat. Fast forward. Our kid asks us to spell some word that I forgot. I laughed wickedly and told him that he has a dictionary now, he can do it. He then pouts and begrudgingly looks at it. I could see in his half angelic, half evil eyes that he was in fact curious and possibly excited about it. Fast forward to the next day. While doing his homework, he asks how to spell avalanche. A quiet pause ensued while the wheels in his rapidly developing brain turned. "I'll look it up in the dictionary!" he timidly spits out. Hallelujah. Our sanity has been saved! The boy proceeded to look up three words within a half hour! I'm very excited to not have to confuse the hell out of my auto-correct and pretend like I'm awkwardly in a spelling bee. I love this book, my wife loves this book, and more importantly? Our kid loves it!
Excellent dictionary, I'd actually call it a one-book encyclopedia... Beautiful pictures, interesting information boxes chock full of sundry tidbits to arouse curiosity and to go one-step beyond, very colorful, and quite inviting!I very much like the phonics-based pronunciations vs the more specific symbolic pronunciations of dictionaries for older children and adults, especially at this age level... I believe the kids relate to the phonetical pronunciations much better since they've spent a lot of time with phonics in the early grades. The book is big and heavy, but should last and last, though I guess I wouldn't mind seeing it in tatters from mucho use!BTW, I am a volunteer reading tutor in an elementary school in Dallas, TX, and buy a copy of this dictionary for each of my students. Many of these students come from homes where children's books are not common, so I want to get them the very best single book I can that will hopefully inspire them and assist them in their studies. This is that book!
I brought this for my 8 year old daughter starting the 3rd grade. It was time to upgrade from the children's dictionary we had been using since 1st grade. I love the fact that this is a dictionary that will last years to come. It's easy for her to read but very detailed. The pictures draw her in since she is more of a visual learner, and it also has the alphabet on the sides to help her find the words. Great price for an amazing educational tool.
Bought the dictionary for my 6 year old. We are really happy with the purchase. A bit on the heavier side but it is quite fun to look up a word she doesn't understand. The pages are printed in color, the explanations are good, and overall, a pretty solid dictionary. The pages are rather thin and can easily be bent...but I guess if they had printed on thicker paper then the dictionary would be heavier and bigger. We've used it regularly within the past week and I foresee us getting lots of use out of it.
I do a little home schooling and decided to buy this to teach them how to put words in alphabetical order. Little did I know that this dictionary was much much more. My grands LOVE this book. When I ask them to find a book to read, they go straight to this dictionary. It's up to date information in the back about our presidents and flags of the different nations, are their favorite places to go to. SOOO worth the money!
Great dictionary for kids. Love the phonetic spelling pronunciation. It has a good balance of photos. It has the alphabet from A to Z on all the pages which is great for my second grader who still needs a little help figuring out which letter goes before which letter. Like if you're trying to find the word: Pickle. You go to P, then P-I, then P-I-C, Etc. Having the alphabet along the side of the page helps the child keep track of whether he should go forward or backward (does K come before L? etc)It's a large dictionary but manageable. It's well bound with a hard textbook cover. The definitions are age-appropriate. It's educational but not dumbed-down.
My seven year-old has gotten better at using this book to learn new words he stumbled upon or figure out how to spell words for his homework. It's a great introduction to teaching him some traditional academic independence (sans Google and the internets)... just in case the zombie apocolypse actually happens and he managed to survive.
I’m glad to have found a large children’s dictionary. It is used very much in our house but we have been unable to find some words in it. Ie tenacity etc. I wanted a kid friendly definition for more advanced words such as these. This dictionary is really good and my 6 year old can find words in it most of the time so no biggie just don’t delete your dictionary app
