As others have stated, this is a dry but informative account of sirenians (manatees and dugongs). It consists of sections on sirenian evolution, people and manatees, accounts of each species (Florida and Antillean manatees, West African manatees, Amazonian manatees, dugongs, and the extinct Steller's sea cow), conservation, etc. The species' accounts give detailed info on anatomy, life history, exploitation, and range and distribution. The book includes a number of black-and-white illustrations and two extensive sets of color photographic plates. The former weren't often of the best quality, with the skeletal illustrations appearing to be blown up reproductions. It also had a list of selected reading and an index. So, if you want a detailed but at times pretty boring introduction to manatees and friends, this book isn't a bad start. Borrow it some place.

I took a class on manatees and read several books on manatees and I found this one to be the most substantial and informative. I highly recommend it.
