PreSchool-Grade 2–One Sukkot, Bubbe Isabella builds a sukkah and decorates it with leaves and branches, colored cloth, apples, grapes, corn, and pumpkins. Each night she wishes for someone to sit with her and share her freshly baked lemon cake. However, the only guests she receives are a caterpillar, a moth, a squirrel, a raccoon, a deer, and a bear that accidentally smashes the cake. They all enjoy munching on different parts of the sukkah and spending the evening together. Just as she is about to disassemble it, a boy asks for her colored cloth to make a flag for the Simchat Torah holiday procession. Bubbe Isabella is happy to finally be able to share her sukkah with someone else. With pleasant, animated illustrations, this unique story connects two Jewish holidays. The simple text reads well aloud, but readers may be disappointed that the words to Bubbe Isabella's welcome song, which she sings each evening to attract visitors, are not included. The Jewish harvest celebration of Sukkot is hardly Hanukkah as far as the world of children's books is concerned, so this volume makes a nice addition to the small body literature about the holiday, which includes Barbara Diamond Goldin's Night Lights: A Sukkot Story (1995). Bubbe Isabella, her sukkah completed, has made a lemon cake to share with visitors. Unfortunately, her visitors are all animals, and they prefer eating the fruits and vegetables that decorate the structure. The moth sips from the grapes, the squirrel nibbles the corn, the porcupine gnaws at the walls. Bubbe doesn't mind; she likes the company, even after the cake gets squashed. When a boy comes by, there's nothing left to share, but he only wants material for a Simchat Torah flag, which leads readers to the next Jewish holiday on the calendar. It's unfortunate that the protagonist isn't a child, with whom kids might more easily identify, and the art's dull green-blue cast is a bit somber. Everything is useful in different ways. What we often start out to do can change and become even more important to others sometimes. It's still all about the celebration of sharing and being thankful. Bubbe Isabella expected people to celebrate with her. Instead there are other wonderful guests that come.

love this book. rcvd with no problems

The story wasn't very interesting.... and the pictures, personally I thought were very ugly. I really hoped it was better, unfortunately I was wrong.

My 3 year old loved this book at Sukkot. The story is so sweet. It shows great patience and to enjoy what you have with you, even if it isn't what you expected it to be.

This is a fun Sukkot story involving different animal visitors to Bubbe Isabella's sukkah. Our toddler enjoys it very much. An added benefit is that it stresses eating non-junk food since the animals all decline a piece of cake in favor of various fruits, etc.
