Only 40 of the book's 126 pages cover snorkeling sites, and the site reviews are usually half a page or less. Access information is sketchy and incomplete, which is too bad since the most important part of snorkeling the big island is knowing how to get to the sites, which are often poorly marked. One map shows the Mauna Lani Bay resort located adjacent to a famous bay and beach (Anaeho'omalu Bay), when it is actually miles to the north. Also, the authors continually refer to the Ritz Carlton Mauna Lani, when it has been called the Orchid at Mauna Lani for years. Only 22 sites are listed, although the jacket claims 26, which is still a superficial look at the many snorkeling sites. The rest of the "book" is basically a primer for snorkeling generally. This was purchased at the same time as "Hawaii-The Big Island Revealed", which might be the best guide/travel/scuba/snorkeling book available

Get this if you want to snorkel the Big Island (I'd recommend Hawaii: the Big Island revealed for everything else). There are more than enough sites listed here to keep you busy for weeks. We just returned from the Big Island and found the book to be very useful to narrow the sites to visit; the maps and gear tips were also great. If you go to Hawaii, don't miss snorkeling the Place of Refuge site!

This book comes through on the most important criterion: It gives useful and specific information on a variety of snorkeling sites and snorkel/dive boat operators. It gives maps, driving directions, and advice on the best way to enter the water at a given site. There is a useful chart that classifies the different snorkel sites as to how good the snorkeling is (water clarity, fish variety) and how easy water entry is. I wouldn't want to snorkel the big island without it. .... If you go to the Big Island equipped with this book, and with "Hawaii: The Big Island Revealed" you will be well-prepared!

Snorkel Hawaii The Big Island Second Edition is the current, in print version of this book. From time to time, the Amazon search engine sends people to this older, out of print version. We have tried repeatedly to correct this, but Amazon seems unable to do it. Try clicking on the authors names, and look for Snorkel Hawai The Big Island Second Edition, which is more up to date.

We bought both this book and their other guide, Snorkel Hawaii Maui and Lanai, and snorkeled both islands.We were impressed by the detailed instructions and very clear maps. My husband gets seasick easily, and the tip on that cured him! Kealakekua Bay is lovely. Highly recommended.

I was very disapointed to fine this book had no photo's, just blk/wht line drawings. Most of the sites reviewed are on the west/Kona side of the island, which is fine, if that is where you are going to be staying. Descriptions and directions seems a bit breif and I'm not sure how useful this book would have been. For almost the same price, "Hawaii the Big Island Revealed", covers many of the same snorkeling spots, and alot more, in much more detail.

I love to snorkel, and found this book had the details I wanted. They tell you all you need to know to find spots nobody else mentions.

It’s a coffee table book.The photographers – entrants in the Royal Observatory Greenwich’s 2018 astrophotography competition – provide information on how they took their photos; their camera, its lens, length of exposure; how far they had to trek, and to wait, to get the perfect shot. A great many of the pictures were taken through telescopes, in some cases remotely controlled from another continent. We learn about those. Then there is the ‘processing’; multiple exposures (sometimes into the thousands) are ‘stacked’, others stitched-together to make a panorama. Adobe Photoshop is used, and other software less well-known outside specialist circles. It’s a photography book.Both the photographers and professional astronomers add information on what we are looking at. Features of our own solar system become commonplace (fabulous as some of the pictures are); the real wonders are nebulae (clouds of glowing gas and dark dust) hundreds and sometimes thousands of light years away (they have names:- seahorse, eagle, witches broom….) and other galaxies – millions, or even billions of light years away, each containing ‘millions (if not billions) of stars’. It’s an astronomy book.And it’s an art book. If Michelangelo had been able to see Steven Mohr’s photograph of the spiral galaxy NGC 3521, it would surely have appeared as background on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Lluis Romero Ventura and Miguel Angel Garcia Borella’s ‘Mosaic of the Great Orion and Running Man Nebula’ put me in mind of Botticelli’s ‘Birth of Venus’ (a very different sort of Venus from the one seen in this book). The several very striking photographs of a vertical Milky Way (the original inspiration for the biblical ‘pillar of fire’?) would surely have appealed to J M W Turner. And the authors of this volume themselves mention Joseph Wright of Derby (an 18th century English artist of a scientific bent), as they do also Michelangelo.I could go on, but I need not. If you are sufficiently interested in phenomenally good photographs of astronomical subjects, impeccably reproduced, to have come this far, don’t hesitate, buy the book.

I was recently asked to develop a new class on church administration for a growing Christian college. Since this is my first time to teach the subject, I contacted my previous church administration professor from my alma mater. This is the book he recommended. Since it is a very thorough book, some will find it overly detailed. Nonetheless,this book answers many questions in terms of procedures that many related books won't even touch. It covers literally every aspect of Church administration and leaves nothing to the imagination. Even though it is written from a Southern Baptist perspective, it is easily adaptable to any denomination. Its only weaknesses is that for someone new to the area of administration, this may seem overwhelming as a first text. Nonetheless, I will be taking a calculated risk and will use it with my summer students a month from now. In short, this is a manual that has been regularly updated and needs to be on every minister's bookshelf.

Excellent! This is really a book for executive pastors and those in lead roles. If you're new to church admin, a student, or even a seasoned shepherd, this book will prove to be an invaluable reference. As a Pastor myself this has been a great tool for educating my team. HOWEVER I'm sure it can become dated quickly, so look out for updates.

Although it's a book about a trip to Taiwan and Japan I found the heart of the book to be about family and friendships and the universal way we give and receive love. Many human and relatable elements were intertwined throughout the journey.I enjoyed reading the book on Kindle because I could 'click' on a place the travelers visited and pull up a Google image of the place. It was super cool to see how the author's descriptions and my imagination compared to the real thing.While I enjoyed learning interesting facts about the places the couple visited, I was equally impacted by the human dynamics in the story.Ex. I was touched when the author shared how he felt guilty about taking the trip because his parents never had a chance to travel.The concept of giving of one's self as an act of kindness was throughout the story in little and big ways. Some examples - when the author wanted his wife's help with stowing their luggage onto the train but he begrudgingly chooses not to ask because he recalls her doing all of their laundry😊❤. Or when the traveling couple pushed past ungodly and even comical sleep deprevation just to be gracious guest to their host. And how their hosts dilgently planned, gave their time and shared their knowledge with the couple.The book inspired a lot of introspection. It made me ask myself, how often do I give for sake of giving? It also made me see the nobility of being a host; offering time and space, giving someone a chance to experience a different culture is virtuous.On a side note, I thought it was adorable how similar the author and his wife seem to be...their humor, money consciousness, buddist like kindness❤. I wonder if they were so similar at the the begining of their relationship or if they grew to share each other's traits❤In short, a book that teaches you new things about the world and inspires you to be a better partner, friend and family member is an excellent book in my opinion. Thank you for the good read Morland Matthews.

Oh my gosh!! What a waste of time!!! Title is perfect however the book is full of complaints. If you want to read a book about traveling to Taiwan and Japan... your better bet is trip advisor. This author clearly sees life half empty. What a waste of time reading his continued misery in Asia. First leg of trip says Taiwan much resembles US so many English signs then says not the cultured trip fast forward to Japan no English signs and he hates it. Hmm stay in NYC

An epic adventure, rivaled only by the tale of Odysseus, I felt like I was there with Morland & his wife as they wandered through Taiwan and Japan. If you want a glimpse of the people and cutlures of these two countries, without the jet lag, you are sure to enjoy this book and gobble it up like a tray of the finest sushi.I hope you experience many more adventures and I encourage you to keep writing and sharing these adventures with both friends & strangers.

It was fun to venture with Morland & Sandra to Taiwan & Japan. Mr. Matthews is comical in certain descriptions that he gives of unexpected and foreign practices. Although these are faraway lands that I probably will not be able to visit personally, I am grateful that I was able to see those countries through Mr. Matthews' eyes while also getting to see the character of the author. I especially enjoyed his experience and difficulties he encountered regarding his boots.

When I read Matthews’s book decades after my interest in breaking bricks with my bare hands or executing a perfect roundhouse kick faded, I remembered why the Far East was, and remains, so fascinating to so many people. Besides the style of combat that Bruce Lee made internationally famous during the trendy and experimental and militant 1970s, it is, among other things, the vast distance: because it’s so incredibly far away, and expensive to travel to that part of the world, it is a rarity for most Americans. Matthews’s putting “Kit Kat” in the title is a stroke of brilliance; it brings the seemingly cosmic experience within easy reach. We are invited, for little more than we would spend on a travel magazine or a pair of earplugs, to follow Matthews and Sandra, his wife, through their well-planned, budget-conscious journey, and through a generous and skillful use of detailed description, we are always right there with them. I can almost feel the nitrogen bubbles welling up inside me from the homicidally long journey. The narrative flows easily, and what is conveyed is a sense of constructive urgency: throughout the book, we feel the tempo and the inspirational anxiety of being late for the flight we’re about to miss. One thing that is missing is the larger sense of urgency that should convince the readers of any travelogue to visit a certain place: Venice is sinking; you’d better get there before it’s gone forever. Or, the ancient ruins of Athens will soon be rotted away by pollution; better get to the Acropolis before it becomes unrecognizable

This book is AMAZING! the self developing flow of the book feels so natural with its emotional ups and downs, while still maintaining your undivided attention and holding true to your expectations, with such prominent questions such as " what will happen next?", "will they find what they are looking for?" or " will they arrive on time?" Which in my opinion would keep any reader turning the pages of this book, in search of those ever so satisfying answers. In the end the reader is left with a much welcomed and favorable understanding of some of the culture , habits ,customs and technology of these places and hopefully also with a bit of curiosity to find out more.

Frances Yates is well-regarded for her superb study "Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition" (1964). This book (1972) is a sequel. It places the murky origins of Rosicrucianism in the context of the religious and political rivalries of the early 17th Century. It is an extremely engaging and fascinating study which, unfortunately, was not carried through to its logical end-point--it reads like a draft of a bigger and more definitive book. But a wonderful draft it is!At this moment there is a danger that the collections of the Warburg Institute, which made all of Yates' work possible, may become unavailable to scholars or even dispersed. These collections are irreplaceable--they are the hard core of scholarship in 16th-17th century cultural evolution. If this book inspires you, please inform yourself and do whatever you can to help preserve this resource for posterity.

Absolutely different and interesting research about the mystical side of early modern history, this kind of book is not written too many times. Most of these kind of books give just shattered "who is who"-collection, but this book investigate the development of magical beliefs, alchemy, science and the connection of these in rosicrusian view, ordinary sources are well attached to the big picture and anachronism is avoided, this is what I call the true historical research. Purely scientific approach to the field that is not considered very scientific. Quite expensive book, but quality costs!

In my opinion this easily ranks among the top books ever written on the Rosicrucian movement. Yates gives prolific detail regarding the earliest developments of this occult group (sometimes overwhelming if you are not already somewhat familiarized with the material). This is a must-read for any serious student of the topic and I highly suggest it to those with an interest in learning more about the order. However I do suggest a bit of research on the Rosicrucians and esotericism in general prior to diving into this one if you want to get the most out of it.

Frances Yates is at top form in this book. She not only gives the history, but many of the connections even to the Enlightenment and to the beginnings of the Scientific Revolution. Unexpected links, and comprehensive coverage. A must for specialists.

John E. Randall has described 555 new fishes--more coral-reef species than anyone else in history. He has authored 635 publications in marine biology, 9 of which are regional guides on the fishes of the Caribbean Sea, Hawaiian Islands, Red Sea, Oman, and Great Barrier Reef of Australia. Since 1970 he has been senior ichthyologist at the Bishop Museum, Honolulu."After getting a B.S. degree in zoology from UCLA in 1950, John Randall sailed his 37-foot ketch to Hawai‘i for doctoral study at the University of Hawai‘i. His first academic position was assistant professor at the University of Miami, Florida. Four years later, he accepted the position of professor of zoology at the University of Puerto Rico as well as director of the Institute of Marine Biology. He returned to Hawai‘i in 1965 as the director of the Oceanic Institute. From 1970 to 2009 he served as the senior ichthyologist with the Bishop Museum. Dr. Randall is the world’s foremost authority on tropical marine fishes. He has authored 745 publications in marine biology, which have included the descriptions of 27 new genera and 686 new species of fishes, ten of which have been discovered in Hawai‘i in the last decade. Fantastic book, a real tome of information.

Highly recommended. If you want detail and lots of color pictures for identification this is the book. The only drawback is it's big and heavy.

I am a saltwater aquarist that is in love with the coral reef and the ocean. I absolutely treasure this book. The detail and time spent to create this is intense. What a magnificent piece of work! Before I go to work, I poor a cup a coffee and browse through the pages a little at a time and think how much I'd rather be tracking these intresting and intrensic species that the ocean has to offer.

Familiar fish and startling discoveries are met side by side in this astonishing collection. With text by the expert and photographs by the best, this hard-cover book is a must-have.
